American wins Mr Gay Hong Kong pageant

Hong Kong’s first Mr Gay pageant attracted six brave men – four local, a Filipino and an American – who not only had to show their wares in swim, sports and formal wear; and had to charm the judges and the crowd.

A new page was opened in Hong Kong’s gay history with the staging of the first ever Mr Gay Hong Kong pageant at the Lan Kwai Fong Bar on Saturday 28 November. Before a packed audience of several hundred, six out-and-proud young men competed for the title which will carry one of them forward to the worldwide competition in Oslo and the role of an international spokesman for Hong Kong’s gay community.

It was an exciting night and a great beginning to what will become, it is intended, a regular fixture in Hong Kong’s calendar. The bar was crowded, the décor glitzy, the music pounding and the show fast paced. It was hosted with pizzazz by RTHK’s Brian Leung (of We Are Family and Gaystation Hong Kong fame, amongst much else) and Colette Koo, founder and Managing Director of Hong Kong’s FINDS restaurant and Drop Bar, and, according to Brian, ‘fag hag of all fag hags’. There were videos of the six boys strutting their stuff in the local bars and Ms Chiquita put in her usual raunchy appearance, announcing that she, Hong Kong’s only non-lip synching drag diva with a CD issued to her name, would be putting the proceeds of the night towards her new eyelashes.

Mr Gay Hong Kong: 30-year-old American dancer Rick Twombley.

All six candidates showed their wares in swim, sports and formal wear and answered questions in front of the lively crowd. The impresarios behind the event, Noel Furrer and James Gannaban, had assembled a panel of judges from Hong Kong’s gay great, good and not-so-good: Barney Cheng, the designer; Paul Hicks, PR guru and proprietor of Grebstad Hicks; Johannes Pong of Hong Kong Magazine; Francis Lo the modelling king and the ubiquitous Colette Koo. They probed the candidate’s psyches with embarrassing, leading and innuendo-full questions; Johannes, for one, coming out from under his trademark hat to ask his candidate who he saw when he looked in the mirror. This was a competition for the guy with not just brawn but some brains, the presence of mind to demonstrate both and the charm to get away with it.

The panel members weren’t the only judges of the day, for the public got the chance to vote for their man online and again by hand on the night (as with Hong Kong’s functional constituency system, you got two votes if you were able to buy a ticket).

Four of the brave guys who entered were Hong Kong Chinese: 28-year-old Joe Leung, an officer with AIDS Concern; Jason Tang, aged 31, just back to Hong Kong from Toronto; Billy Leung, the 25-year-old hero of the court case that brought Hong Kong’s gay age of consent down to 18 and an officer of Amnesty International; and Gilbert Cheng, 30 years of age and working in the hospitality industry. One candidate was Filipino, charismatic interior designer, 38-year-old Ziggy Bautista. The winner, in something of a cultural upset, proved to be candidate number six, 30-year-old American dancer Rick Twombley, who was born in Pittsburgh and bred in Grand Island, Nebraska, real farm country. He’s been in Hong Kong since 2005 working as a dancer (he’s skilled in both classical and modern dance), singer and acrobat, and his great stage presence helped him carry the day.

Rick Twombley with David Bosley, the reigning Mr Gay Philippines.

As did his great charm, as was evident when Rick turned to the audience for help with his final question, deferring to his boyfriend, who was sitting close by, as to whether they would bring up a child. From their joint positive answer to that question, it looks like the new Mr Gay Hong Kong and his partner may one day add parenthood to the responsibilities the title will bring Rick. This being the first of the Mr Gay series here, these are yet to be defined.

Organiser James Gannaban told me that “Noel and I are still in the process of structuring a year-long tenure for the titleholder. The title, itself, is a platform for the man who wins it, and so Rick will be instrumental in setting precedents in every way.”

Rick himself told me his views of his role: “As Mr Gay Hong Kong, I will represent the cultural diversity that makes Hong Kong a truly unique and vibrant city. I will also act as an international voice for equality, promote openness, and change the perception that to be gay is to be different.”

Whatever the issues which will engage Rick, he’ll definitely be representing Hong Kong in Oslo in February next year, and we can look forward to seeing a good deal more of his handsome face and notable style in Hong Kong’s media over the coming year.

he is cute, but... should Mr. GAY HK be an Asian? wat s ur thought?
2. 2009-12-10 15:00
Yes...He should be Asian
3. 2009-12-10 15:26
the winner should be a HK citizen, not necessarily an asian. if participants from all over the world are allowed to compete, then it should be called Mr Gay World.
4. 2009-12-10 15:28
consider this is the first Mr. Gay HK and not all are brave enough to take part so i think it's okay..
to draw the first line in gay history in HK, guess it will encourage more to take part in the next pageant...
let's wait and see...
5. 2009-12-10 16:02
HE'S NOT SO HOT ENOUGH TO BE MR HK :(
6. 2009-12-10 16:16
He must be very proud lol
7. 2009-12-10 16:19

Ziggy is hot, period! hehehe
8. 2009-12-10 16:24
American wins Mr Gay Hong Kong pageant.... Errh whats is that?
9. 2009-12-10 16:37
Mr.HongKong is an American? that does seem strange to me.... but I guess after all that gloabalisation I should try to become Mr. Japan or maybe even Miss Italy if I put on some makeup and wear a push-up-bra...
Brave-new-world!
10. 2009-12-10 16:51
Eh..This is Mr Gay Hong Kong!
Not Miss America!
The organizers must be really desperate to fill up the stage!

that's that~
12. 2009-12-10 17:00
lol I will go to H.K next years :-p
13. 2009-12-10 17:32
I don't "get it" either. And I'm disappointed by the outcome. Initially (when fridae.com first broke the story) the thought of holding a contest like this felt "stupid" to me anyway, and the results, in my mind, justify my initial feelings about putting gay men up on a stage and judging them like Miss Universe.
How does an American qualify for a "Mr. Hong Kong" contest in the first place? Does he hold a Hong Kong I.D./Passport? Is he 1/2 Asian? Well, Post #11 put it well: "what's done is done". Question is, should it be done again?? No questions, it certainly does demand a certain type of "bravery" to participate in such an affair....
14. 2009-12-10 17:34
Kind of Ironic....
15. 2009-12-10 17:38
A survey done in SINGAPORE said that 70% of chinese male in that island are aspired to be caucasian/white. so i am not surprised.
16. 2009-12-10 17:41
WTF Recount! Jason Wong 1ST!!!
17. 2009-12-10 17:47
I love Jason Tang's body type... fit yet sooo juicy mmm... ^_^
18. 2009-12-10 17:52
Who the hell picked these photos for the article? I see no Asian contestants. Want to see Jason hot bod!
This article sucks!
19. 2009-12-10 18:36
Really disappointing, especially given it's the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Nothing against Rick Twombley but he is hardly "from Hong Kong". What are the qualifying requirements - that you can represent HK on a working visa? If a guy had been born here or lived here for years - effectively a "local", that would be a different story. Plus of course, there are thousands of gorgeous native Honkies here who would be brilliant envoys for HK. How are other nations to view Hong Kong when an all American boy turns up in Oslo? The organisers have a lot to answer for for not getting the message out to a wider audience which would have fielded more contestants. This part was amateurishly handled. I think most of us are looking forward to seeing a hot, smart Chinese guy - and there are loads here - take to the podium next year.

Firstly the person should win irrespective of his/her race. That is the ideal we ought to strive for. However, given the fact that the queer movement in asia is often led by western ideas (including its body politics) we have grown up postulating beauty from that angle. Even asian models are are used in ads often reflect äsiatic variations on the western perfect forms. Until asian societies have evolved our own self confidence in branching out of this western led global vision of our community, it is likely that we will continue to draw greater appreciation of all things western compared with eastern.
22. 2009-12-10 18:52
I have to agree with gogosamba, if an Asian won Mr Gay UK there would be no racial questions about it. At the same time I am dissapointed an Asian didnt win, because I personally dont find the American attractive.

Ziggy is hot, I had the pleasure of meeting him in Shanghai some years ago, he is a generous host and definately a winner!

23. 2009-12-10 19:00
Am I the only one who thinks they are ALL winners,

Mr Gay Hong Kong should be a native of HK, Mr Gay America should be a native from America, I'm just proud that we are able to hold these events across the world and look forward to my visit to HK in Feb 2010, so I can see the gay scene there for my self.
24. 2009-12-10 19:05
omg fuckin ugly...lots of amercians are hotter then this... This is Mr Gay Hong Kong quality? and why i dont see any asian in here.. sucks campaigne, sorry my own opinion.
25. 2009-12-10 19:16
I guess people had certain expectations after they watched several Mr HK.

Hopefully with a bigger budget next year, they can get more contestants.

Whatever pageant, there will be controversies.
26. 2009-12-10 19:21
well i personally think he is not the Mr gay hk!! he maybe talented in dancing, i think he could get an award for dancing or singing maybe
but definitely not a right person to take up the mr hk award!! he is not asian either how can he representing an asian plus he isnt that hot too...
haha i saw hotter asians in the news!!! lol

drool
27. 2009-12-10 19:37
there are all gross
28. 2009-12-10 20:07
Disappointing. Mr Gay Hongkong must be an Asian HK citizen. I guess the pageant rules didnot have this requirement. It would be ridiculous for an American to represent HK in an international pageant, lol. Anyway, congrats to the winner.
29. 2009-12-10 20:08
There are so many handsome men in Hong Kong, and they chose an American caucasian? Sorry, I don't get it.
30. 2009-12-10 20:22
i agree mr. darloman.. i dont get it too.... the title of the search was mr.gay honkong... then the person who won was a caucasian.... hehehehe,,c'mon!
31. 2009-12-10 20:24

32. 2009-12-10 20:33
watever it is they have d guts to reveal themselves and well done...muah umuah!
33. 2009-12-10 20:42
HK is an international city ... does it matter what race or nationality the winner is ??? He could be the new (though, maybe temporary) face of GAY ... Hong Kong! ... or maybe some of us are too dated and out to realize and or accept that ... ... ... too used to the comfortable stereotypes & generalization?

Obama did win, didnt he ?

good day now ... xoxoxo
34. 2009-12-10 20:46
HK is an international city with many residents and citizens from many different background.
It doesn't matter where a person is born or his race.
To represent HK at an international level,
that person MUST BE AT LEAST:
have a GREAT knowledge of HK & it's culture, spoken language and holder of a permanent HKID.
35. 2009-12-10 20:49
Mr GAY HONG KONG IS AN AMERICAN ???
gees that HONG KONG should change its name to AMERICA then ???
of course its weird
im sure there are plenty nice good looking fit asian (born and raised in HOng Kong ) should be the MR GAY HONG KONG
36. 2009-12-10 21:02
Is ok
37. 2009-12-10 21:05
such a sad result
i bet he doesn't even love hk and it's people as much as i do~
38. 2009-12-10 21:10
30 yr old? ooookie..lol
39. 2009-12-10 21:17
I'm guessing only 4 HK men in signed up and the organisers had pretty lax requirements about who can join the contest thus the American and the Filipino... Hmmm, but it won't be much of a contest between just 4 contestants would it?
40. 2009-12-10 21:21
should be Asian Asian .....Not Caucasian...what is happening
41. 2009-12-10 21:21
I think it should be called Mr. Gay International
42. 2009-12-10 21:34
I think it has no problem to be American as long as he is legally reside in HK. Since HK positions itself as an asia's world city. A world city should be able to accept different ethic background i guess.
43. 2009-12-10 21:43
i d like to be the "queen" of england though i am just a little Chinese-kiwi bird, will i have change Mr. floor 33?
And that would be really vomiting if the survey is correct in Mr. floor 15's post!

what is all this racist nonsense about him having to be asian ... on one hand hysterical bitter old asian queens moan about white sumpremacy and how asians should be better represented in the west - yet when the tables are turned, out comes their racism.

all that should qualify him is whether he is a citizen/PR of HK period.
45. 2009-12-10 22:35
No, he can't be 30. LOL
46. 2009-12-10 22:40
He has lived in HK since 2005 shouldn't he have the right?
47. 2009-12-10 22:54
so hot................... ...........I love him
48. 2009-12-10 23:00
congratulations...
49. 2009-12-10 23:19
From another American, I think its rediculous an American won. Its "Mr Gay HONG KONG"!! Firstly, he should be citizen or at least PR of HK (which possibly this guy is). Secondly, irrespective of equality and all, it should be someone who represents HK without having to explain it. In other words, ASIAN. Im certainly dissapointed
50. 2009-12-10 23:22
Well, look at it this way:

(1) The event was organized by and for English speakers, a language that has a vocabulary and culture of massively demeaning East Asians;

(2) The event is organized toward the goal of sending someone to the Mr. Gay World finals, an event also conducted in English, and thus also carrying the same set of barriers towards Asians;

(3) The event was NOT conducted in Cantonese, thus excluding I don't know how many possible candidates;

(4) Judging from how the event was conducted in English, I'm assuming that the contest was not grassroots at all; instead, it was more ... foreign in nature (to put it politely).

I think it goes without saying, then, that the event was likely judged based on principles conducive to English-speaking cultures, not Cantonese-speaking cultures (i.e., not according to Hong Kong culture). The problem going on in Hong Kong is probably similar to the one in Singapore where both cultures are adopting English more, but in the same process are exoticizing themselves on the official level (Singapore advertises itself to tourists as an "exotic" location with "exotic" food ... a word I don't exactly hear being used for any Western destinations). The situation with the Hong Kong ID cards was also probably complicated by how Hong Kong is a SAR, as well as how Hong Kong was never an autonomous political system (it was a British colony beforehand), but I can't say for sure because I'm unfamiliar with the ID system.

Personally, though, I think it was a huge mistake on the part of the organizers: Man Asia Productions (i.e., James Gannaban and Noel Furrer). They are apparently very disconnected from Hong Kong culture and from what it means to be "from Hong Kong."

As for #44, I don't think he has ANY idea of the history of white-Asian relations. If someone insults, harasses and disrespects you, who should be first to apologize and make amends? Who should be first to show themselves genuinely trustworthy?
51. 2009-12-10 23:23
Absolutely agree with Post 44. What's with all the comments about Mr Gay HK having to be Asian? All the discussions about race/racism on Fridae is apparently not sufficient - being "against" racism is surely not an one-way street.
52. 2009-12-10 23:29
From http://www.manasiaproductions.com/page5.php

Qualifications for Mr. Gay Hong Kong
- Valid Hong Kong ID Card
- Good command of spoken and written English is an asset. The winner of Mr. Gay Hong Kong will compete in The Mr. Gay World Pageant, which will be conducted in English
- Must be 21-40 years old
- Minimum height requirement of 5’7” or 170cm
- No previous criminal record
- Is eligible for travel to Oslo, Norway for the Mr. Gay World finals in February 2010
53. 2009-12-10 23:36
Only 6 were there - that is not really a competition at all neither is it representative of the HK gay population. There are hundreds if not thousands of better looking guys on Fridae alone. Sorry Mr HK but that is what I see. This cannot be recognised really it’s a badly run or publicised joke. And to be honest the runners uyp aint that cute either... now that was rude!
54. 2009-12-10 23:55
You cant help but notice those really hot asian guys with white guys of questionable looks, weight, age, and behavior issues that you encounter in the clubs, bars, restaurants, theatre. It's like you don't see that so much with straight couples. So much that people often say how much the straight couples look alike. An american, white and not the best looking? Oh I know, Mr. Congeniality! But is this the depth of how much asians worship anglo saxons. Hmmmm.
55. 2009-12-11 00:00
hummm...American is Mr Gay Hong Kong ..maybe this year thai will be Mr gay American. nice
56. 2009-12-11 00:15
the winner looks friendly and nice body...but it's really Hong Kong’s first Mr Gay pageant?
57. 2009-12-11 00:17
He is 34 this month not 30 according to this on Google: Descendants of Roy McKinley Bartholomew Richard Twombley b: 12/29/1976 o: Professional dancer/entertainer ... So its a Stage Age!

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3Aen-gb%3AIE-ContextMenu&rlz=1I7DKUK&q=Rick+Twombley+born&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
58. 2009-12-11 00:33
What A JOKE! And I'm an American gweilo. Were all the judges big ole potato queens? Can't wait till this dude gets to Oslo and straps on his MISTER HONG KONG sash...Hope he gets laughed off the stage amidst all those gorgeous blond-haire, blue eyed Scandinavians.

And anyone who gets duped into wasting time and money on next year's MR. HONG KONG contest is a dope. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on ME!
59. 2009-12-11 00:37
p.s. And, if he were strutting his stuff in Orlando, Florida near my hometown, I could just hear all the queens in the audience shrieking, "HONEY, did you get THE BEAK on her?" I guess he won cuz of his English-speaking ability....tee hee....
60. 2009-12-11 00:37
Oop, I missed my chance...he..he.h.e...
61. 2009-12-11 00:46
I reckon that Mr Gay Hong Kong should at least be Asian if not Chinese. I mean, surely America has their own version of Mr Gay American. Saying that though, in the UK, any guy of any race is allowed to enter so is that any difference? hmm.....
62. 2009-12-11 01:03
how many people attend for this competition?
63. 2009-12-11 01:05
hi so nice
64. 2009-12-11 01:06
haha, Mr Gay Hong Kong should be a Hong Kong-er!! aside from that, the 3rd guy from the left is a tad chubby isn't he? i mean, if its a competition mainly abt looks and bod, then he should have worked out a bit more hmm.

66. 2009-12-11 01:46
yeah, 3rd from the left is a total porker. the prize must have really sucked to only have 3 hot guys in it
67. 2009-12-11 02:09
I laughed when i read this article, how can an american even think it is a good idea to enter the pageant. I think the basis of representing a country in some type of worldwide competition should rest on being a citizen of said country. Anyway, my suggestion would be to firm up the rules of entry next year.
68. 2009-12-11 02:13
I personally am a close friend of the 2 organizers and know intimately the ordeal they went through trying to create a positive image of gays in Hong Kong. I'm quite disappointed in all the finger pointing here by people who have absolutely NO idea what they are talking about and making ASS-umptions that make you look like complete idiots.

I know for a fact they had almost 20 contestants at one stage, most of them locals. But when it came to crunch time and the publicity photo etc stage kicked in, almost all the local boys dropped out. For the most part, they just simply weren't ready to become public figures and allow their images shown in the press. The locals here, it appears, are still afraid of their sexual identity, or at least how others perceive theirs. If this was not the case, more would have entered.

Mr Gay HK btw, got blanket coverage in the Western Press here. And yes, a disappointing shortcoming was lack of local Asian press coverage, but simply most of the local language media here (who were approached by the organizers) either ignored the story or flat out refused to report on the hunt for contestants.

So, if you're going to take a negative attitude and post ignorant opinions here, just ask yourself- what have YOU done to help your gay community lately other than get off your tits at the local club and sleep your way through everyone in town? The 'chubby' guy some of you are picking on here- that guy got off his arse and CHANGED THE LAW here in HK so that we got EQUAL AGE OF CONSENT. When he was just 18! He's a HERO in my eyes and anyone who has anything nasty to say about him, understand it's like throwing stones at HK's very own Harvey Milk. Haters, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
69. 2009-12-11 02:36
Jason Tang (2nd guy) has a hotter body and nicer looking face compared to the American guy
70. 2009-12-11 03:18
I suppose it would have been better if the winner was an asian guy ! but thats life
71. 2009-12-11 03:48

73. 2009-12-11 04:11
terrible, terrible........................no have beautiful asians in HK ?
I know thousands of them.....................
Crazy life, crazy gay business
74. 2009-12-11 04:21
Sorry, but this sort of thing just makes Hong Kong look bad!

Perhaps next time they can hold an event that celebrates the beauty and masculinity of asian men! And if an asian man didn't win, oh well, but at least he could be a citizen of the freakin country!

75. 2009-12-11 04:31
He must to be asian...
76. 2009-12-11 04:56
why is it necessary to have "beauty" pageant anyway? it's so last century. superficial is the most polite word to describe the whole thing.
77. 2009-12-11 05:01
Well I don't think the winner must be asian but at least HK born.

I think it would be racist to exclude people from different ethnic backgrounds. It would be like saying people who enter Mr Gay UK have to be white. I guess it would be fairer if it were someone HK born, definetely not American born.

Overall, its a bit of a farce. It's kind of like when people aren't good enough to play football or cricket for England, they can always always go and play for Hong Kong. Lol.

Clearly this has become quite a disappointment to most, as it has with me.

@hotkiss I agree with you completely. This is Hong Kong's first gay pageant and it's almost a slap in the face to Hong Kong seeing that a non-Asian put his mark on the launch.

@stonedog Your opinion is quite valid. I'm sure the committee ran into a lot of problems and it's too bad that the asians who weren't ready to become publicity figures pulled out. I don't think anyone means to bash the pageant or any of the contestants or members who made it possible and to the great success as one step forward in making a positive mark on HK's gay community... Just the fact that an American had won and the image it brings with it. That's all. Sorry for my ignorance as well in advance.

Hopefully next year, with more support from the local community and press, we'll make a happier and more balanced result.
79. 2009-12-11 05:26
1st place Jason Tang

Phuleeezz!!! He is absolutely totally not cute and not even a HongKonger! What a sham! Shame! Shame! Shame!
81. 2009-12-11 05:34
No offence but Mr. Gay HK should be an Asian. I can't imagine any Asian would win the pageant had the event was held in the U.S.A.. Come on, Asian people, get over it. Stop warshipping white people. This American guy who won doesn't even look cute or handsome. As a matter of fact, he looks rather awful.
82. 2009-12-11 05:39
hmm... are there no eligible hong kongers who fit the bill?
83. 2009-12-11 05:44
Just 6 entered the pageant. Should there be a min. number of contestants to call it a pagaent on an international level?
Surely there are more beautiful men in HK than just 6. I guess the rest don't like being exposed OUT there about their sexual identity.
A credit for those 6 men, especially if they are locals.
An America is Mr HK? Just not quite right?
If the contest was conducted in English not Cantonese. So Cantonese is not important? I speak Cantonese with my Australian accent whenever Im in HK, Just a nice thing to do when you are in a country that language/ dialect is used.
By the way, What is prize money? I'll do it for the bar tap. and for FUN!!!
lets hope there will be more than just miserable 6. next year.

I think the essence of the pageant was lost. Why would the organisers allow a foreigner or a non resident win the crown? I personally feel that there should have been strict guidelines as to who can join the local pageant. I suppose the locals were not brave enough to join that is probably why the organisers just signed in whoever was interested just to make the pageant happen. I understand it would be no fun if there were just 4! Well HKG residents, do something about it :-) join in for the next one (if there is another one soon).
86. 2009-12-11 06:29
American??

Anyway i love gay!
87. 2009-12-11 06:38
Although i must agree with most of you who commented on this, i must say that we should give the winner a benefit of the doubt.
let him prove himself first. besides, he won't be mister hongkong if he's not deserving for the title.
with only 6 participants and being rated the way the carry themselves and answer tough questions, its not that hard to chose who will be the winner though!
88. 2009-12-11 07:16
A Mr Gay Hong Kong should be of the territory. Simple as that. This guy is very attractive but let him be Mr Gay of whereever he came from - and that wasn't HK.
89. 2009-12-11 07:35
The contest sounded a little sad and desperate to me, with hardly much support (contestant wise). Hopefully it will improve with time and by then you can be picky and impose whatever restrictions in the name of having a standard like other contests of the similar nature. It is easier to complaint and pass comments as an observer than to stand up there and brave it in front of a crowd of strangers. This is a good start so bravo for effort. Provide constructive feedback to help improve next year's contest.

way to defeat the whole purpose.
91. 2009-12-11 08:07
IMHO, all things being said, we shld applaud the move by these 6 contestants to stand out there and be subject to the bouquets/brickbats by the judges, media, critics, etc...

i think the organisation of this contest is already a milestone in itself and having arrived at this point, let's look ahead and hope the titleholder and the organisers will put in their best to advance the cause and contribute to a better human condition :)
92. 2009-12-11 09:17
I agreed to some of the folks here, Mr Gay Hong Kong should be someone locally born and raised, who can really represent Hong Kong.

Again, race is not significant, however, don't we all like to see a Hong Kong Chinese to be Mr Gay Hong Kong?

I'm looking forward to seeing a better result next year!
93. 2009-12-11 09:51
I guess one thing!
Wake up call for all HK gays out there!
Show them what you've got and otherwise the others will get the awards....
Nothing against but next time you HK gays!!!! DO some effort!
Otherwise this will happen again and again and again so don't complain! or disappoint!!!!
A competition must have good showmanship!!!!
Work out!!!!!
94. 2009-12-11 10:03
maybe Hong Kong dun have good hunk must imported from America...
95. 2009-12-11 10:16
It's worth remembering that in Hong Kong racial discrimination is illegal. It is not possible to hold a public competition limited on ethnic grounds. Competitions have to be open to all residents.

The Mr Gay China competition to be held in Beijing on 15 January will, according to the organisers, also be open 'to anyone who lives in China, local or foreign.'
96. 2009-12-11 10:23
Personally Mr HK should be only for the local gay citizens who are born and raised in HK be it he is pure chinese or mix race.
But then again why bring up the race issues.. after all we are One regardless if we are white or non white gayman..
I m sure in future MR HK wil have more contestants who represent his country proudly..
97. 2009-12-11 10:28
oh dry up bois! go do something meaningful!
98. 2009-12-11 10:36
i dont think that mr. hk needs to be an asian but at least a homegrown! cuz then when he represents hk, he has something "authentic" to share.

but on the other hands...if there arent enough local participants...what can u do?!?!
99. 2009-12-11 11:03
I think the issue is really the gensis for the contest and the organizing committee. Although I recognize the work of the two organizers and the overall efforts that have been put in (they must have broken their backs over this), I think that it would have been more ideal to have local Hong Kong people be part of the organizing committee and decision-making, this would have probably influenced the type of participants entering, the language and the communications, the asethetics and the overall support from the local Chinese community as well as the media. The question of race politics, identity and inclusiveness could have also been discussed whereby policies and practices would be a built on consensus-building and democracy.
100. 2009-12-11 11:07
hummm, seems it is hotter here! 99 posts so far, and only 3 posts on "young Asian American mayor " news. and 1 of the comments was deleted!! (perhaps, was too rough)

hold on to the racial issue thing for a sec, have we ever ask ourselves as we are all gays either in the cloest / openly, what is the meaning of our lives?!

living superfacially nd continully moaning about the unfair treatments recieve from others, or shall we contribute effects to make gay life better in real for us?!

what can an young gay mayor brings to the society vs what does new Mr gay Hk bring to the locals
brain vs beauty

young Chinese American Maor vs Mr. (American) gay HK
3 comments vs 99 comments

who is hotter?! i would definetly vote Evan Low for the Mr. gay China

congrts! Man Asia Prodcuction, you did good marketing job, certainly draw attention from us.

He is not really hot comparing to Asian Guy. Should be asian as Mr. Gay HK.
103. 2009-12-11 11:35
To me this seems very strange; this is a man who has been living in Hong Kong for four years and is expected to be an ‘international spokesman for Hong Kong’s gay community’? It really isn’t fair on him or the gay community in Honk Kong to expect him to relate or represent the Hong Kong gay community when he clearly can not have the same level of understanding of the issues that gay Hongkongers face as someone born and raised in Hong Kong would have.

As for him having to be Asian, that is ridiculous, but at the same time this would be better than the American who was raised in a vastly different culture, at least an Asian would be from a culture much more similar to that of Hong Kong than the Rick Twombley. (When I say Asian, I am referring to a person raised in an Asian country not, for example, a Chinese American or a Korean Australian). But of course a native Hongkonger is obviously the best option when choosing someone to represent Hong Kong.

Having said all this, Rick Twombley must have some level of public support as there was a online public vote. Unfortunately I don’t believe that the online voters were voting on the basis of who would be best to represent them, but who they thought was the best looking, or something similar, but of course that is not for me to assume.

All in all it is up to the Hong Kong gay community to choose who they want to represent them, next time I hope they choose someone more suitable.

Your kidding right? A white foreigner won Mr Gay Hong Kong?!
107. 2009-12-11 12:17
After reading stonedog's posting, I have a better understanding and empathy for the organizers, contestants and everyone associated with the pagent. This was their first, and humble attempt, and maybe next year will be better, IF all the gorgeous gay boys (and there are thousands of them in HK) get over their fear of being in the public spotlight and outed. Maybe the content and format of the next pagent can be less "Miss Universe-ish", focusing a little bit less on swimsuits and talent and delve into other areas that are more 21st century and relevant to hard-news, gay lifestyle issues. (Maybe Billy Leung SHOULD have won the contest for what he's done to change the consent law in HK. You are a hero Billy!). How many of US can claim to have changed government laws? Until otherwise convinced, however, I still believe the contestants should be Hong Kong citizens and I don't mind being blasted with the "racist" label at all. (Perhaps my views will change). But now, my understanding, and the nature of my disappointment have changed thanks to all these posts above mine. thanks.

The cutest guy should always win. So where were all the cute HK guys? Personally, I like Joe Leung, but I know there are lots of cute HK guys out there. Maybe they will participate next year and win the title back. I hope so.
110. 2009-12-11 13:07
Golbert looked the best in the picture...I hope this competition will help other gays coming out of closet...
111. 2009-12-11 13:19
I *think* we all Hong Kong Chinese/residents eligible to compete in Mr. *Gay* America, alright someone please nominate me to represent the gAysian Americans. (Why uses the word "Gay" for the title in the first place anyway?)

Alright enough sarcasm, for those who cares about homosexuals in Hong Kong or Hong Kong cultures, in fact this, or any kind of male beauty contests are usually under looked. I mean, how many of Hong Kong residents were aware of this competition? I myself have not seen any form of advertisements PRIOR to the final stage of such competition flowing around our community. Not to say if the community is *interested* in these things.

To the judges and marketing team: LOOK at the Hong Kong registered users on Fridae or any other *more* racially diverse network sites (you know what they are), and ask yourself, is this year's winner/contestants even close to what you see the HK hotties on average? Seeing is believing.

Another white guy. When are Asians going to learn? How many Chinese are there in this world?
113. 2009-12-11 13:26
P.S. I respectfully am of no offense to the winner or contesters, I admire you all for your braveness. Congratulations to the Mr. Rick Twombley!
114. 2009-12-11 13:32
115. 2009-12-11 13:42
Probably the American winner, Rick, has the best overall package, as decided by the judges, and hence was voted the winner. Anyhow, while many may feel that 1 of the local HK-born Chinese contestants should have won instead, one should also be fair to Rick and the runner-up, a Filipino. If it was meant to be a Mr HK Gay Chinese contest, then the organisers should have stated it as such, and much of the unhappiness over the eventual winner would not have come up.
116. 2009-12-11 13:55
"Government language policy
After the handover, the government of Hong Kong adopted the "biliterate and trilingual" (兩文三語) policy. Under this policy, Chinese and English must both be acknowledged as official languages, with Standard Cantonese being acknowledged as the de facto official spoken variety of Chinese in Hong Kong, while also accepting the use of Standard Mandarin.[1]

The Civil Service Bureau monitors the implementation of the government's language policy at the civil level, the Department of Justice governs the legal aspect and the Education and Manpower Bureau monitors the educational aspect."

hope u got enough time to get Chinese language lessons done before u off to Oslo, Rick!

once again, WHO CARE'S? "beauty" (whatever the hell that means) pageants are so archaic. can't you do something more meaningful? superficial, superfluous and sad.

how come .. he is asian ? also not cute like asian .. :(
120. 2009-12-11 14:48
Ricky , be a good guy & just hand the crown to JASON TANG or any of the other HK boys ,they are what MR GAY HONG KONG should be about !
121. 2009-12-11 14:52
First of all, congratulations to the winner, he's probably nice and sweet and handsome.. however, I think an american guy (or a french one for that matter) winning the FIRST EVER Mr. Gay Hong Kong contest is pretty lame .. Think of Mr. Gay Argentina being asian, Mr. Gay Greece being a black man, or Mr. Japan being a white guy... it just doesn't quite make sense because it doesn't fully represent those countries.... This is not a matter of legal citizenship but a matter of identity, and whether we like it or not, sometimes that includes race too.

just for some of non-Chinese speaking people,
Chinese = (Mandarin+Cantonese+other local dialogues in China); some of English speaking people might be confused;

wish u can be socially and culturally accepted since u have won the title of Mr.Gay HK, Rick and hope u can do a good job.

See Jason Tany fly up, up!
To win the Mr Gay Hong Kong flag.
He's our boy who is HK asain & gay ,
& always striving for glory and fame!
See Jason Tany fly up, up,
The other gay guys he don't fear,
They all try their best,
But they can't get near,
As JASON fly's up!

Jason , enjoy Oslo ;)

Umm Mr. America got Mr. Gay HK because he's a white man in Asia. Enough said, na?
129. 2009-12-11 15:46
well, if the winner claims that he's met all the requirements, he's got every right to be defended. However, i personally feel that it should be local born Hong Konger.

And yes, unless the press successfully conveys the difficulty of circumstances that the organizers and judges have faced during the contest, this is only gonna make Hong Kong look bad and inferior (for not being able to express themselves freely and some may even think that the locals aren't attractive enough)

Still big round of applause for all the contestants.. well done
130. 2009-12-11 16:19
I may be partial, but I happen to think that Billy Leung (yes, the third guy from the left) deserves to be the first Mr Gay Hong Kong, and prove to everyone that being Mr Gay Hong Kong isn't only about looks and physique, but about being an all around outstanding citizen and ambassador for the gay community.

Billy rocks my world! If you don't know why, google him.

Obviously racism is alive and well from many of the previous posts...would they have a problem with an asian winning an american beauty pageant? Sadly still more work on cross cultural diversity needs to be explored perhaps...;-)
133. 2009-12-11 16:39
i dont think he deserve it coz he really look sucks...! and i think it should be the one counting from left number 2 and 4!!sexy!!!!
134. 2009-12-11 16:47
I totally have to agree with #130. Well said. Of all us gay people here in HK, Billy Leung is definitely the most outstanding person! He should have won for the reasons mentioned.
135. 2009-12-11 16:48
stupid, if there aint any local to represent mr hk then dun organise mr hk event, do something else, u do not need a yank to represent gay hk.
136. 2009-12-11 16:52
so much of racism so sad.......!!!
137. 2009-12-11 16:55
Does he live in Hong Kong? If he does that is fine. If not, he should have been allowed to enter the contest. In America anyone living in the USA can enter the pageant for Miss America and has a chance to win. What is the big deal? With such few candidates, there were not many to pick from. As long as the organizers and judges felt that he had the qualities they were looking for, it is ok. I am sure the rules do not say he must be Chinese or must be Asian or must be a native of Hong Kong.
138. 2009-12-11 16:59
Whatever his colour...This kind of pageant is shallow and baseless and stinks of body fascism. Why do we have to judge people on the way they look. A good heart is way better than a good six-pack.
139. 2009-12-11 17:14
Congratulations to the American guy for winning ...but I woulda liked to have seen more pics of the Asian contestants....Going on the one pic on the article where they were visible I would have had a tough time picking the winner :)........Gawd!! when will the world realise that it's not just about muscles and abs.......best wishes to all six for having a go.
140. 2009-12-11 17:43
It was Mr. GAY (HONG KONG), not Mr. HK (GAY).

There is a difference, isn't there?
141. 2009-12-11 17:46
If he was eligible to participate, he was eligible to win! and he did! why cant people just congratulate the guys (all of them) for taking part in a fun event! ...

good evening ... xoxoxox
142. 2009-12-11 17:59
It all sounds very contrived....I am sure with a little bit of publicity more (and better) contestants could be have been found.
143. 2009-12-11 18:08
Happy birthday for monday JASON TANG , from your number one australian fan !
144. 2009-12-11 18:30
I'm just happy for GAY Hong Kong. PERIOD.

November '09 was a big fabulous month for HK full of historical queer milestones. We had Floatilla IV, Pride March II, Volume III, the 1st Mr Gay HK and the 1st ever Drag recording artist in Asia: La Chiquitta, who released "Tranny In The House"- her debut single here. (Search it on Youtube to hear it).

As a city & a community we are making much progress & everyone who has participated either as an organizer or spectator should be applauded.
145. 2009-12-11 18:32
I am sure it must have been a major job to get the contest up and running in a place like Hong Kong, and the organisers do deserve a lot of credit - as do those who entered. But I agree with those who suggest it is wrong for a non-Hong Kong-born citizen - or at the very least a Hong Kong permanent ID holder - to be able to enter, let alone win. I hope they tighten the rules in future.
146. 2009-12-11 18:38
I am shocked...actually, disgusted, by what I've read posted here. These comments make Hong Kong sound like the most racist, intolerant, and ignorant place on the face of the planet! This poor guy seems to be standing up for a good cause, seems willing to make a difference, and you're ready to stone him to death instead of celebrating his courage!! You're all worried about "an outsider" representing you??? ...I would be more worried about how you are representing yourselves!

Great work, I applaude all the guys who took part or helped organise the event & am sorry I was not able to be there for it when it was happening...

we have all had our struggles, some greater than others, but as I say...

before you pass judgement on me & who I am....hear my story!
149. 2009-12-11 19:42
In the future, the rules should say that Mr. Gay Hong Kong must be a citizen of Hong Kong. That is fair and free of racism.

Now, about the qualifications for the judges?
150. 2009-12-11 19:53
What a great thread of comments. I've learned a lot reading these 149 posts.

Questions:
What exactly can HK expect now of it's winner?

Besides traveling to Oslo later to compete in an international "pagent", what is he expected to contribute to HK and the gay community during his "reign"?

Or is this all for "fun" and "show"? (like the Mr. Babylon episode from QAF)

If there's a repeat "pagent" next year, organizers please read above and make your Improvement Lists and refine your scorecards. Build stronger coalitions, recruit more contestents, procure additional media coverage, community and corporate backing. A GOOD job was done this year; so please take the constructive criticism to heart, utilize your experiences from this year and make sure a GREAT job is done next year.

This sucks...Common, Rick was qualified to join since he live and work in HK and a resident. whatevs. Why all these people are making such a big fuss about this. The contest was advertised for several months and probably these were the only brave men who dare to join this contest. If others are saying here that they have seen better looking or handsome men than Rick then why they didnt join or you guys could have bring them and drag them to join the contest. period.. WHy being racist?..sigh..COngrats to Rick though....

To the winner, congrats! You're not my favorite, but hey, you've got what jury (and maybe audiences) looked upon to be Mr. HK Gay.
To those who say this thread being racist, well, this is not the first time such racism appears on fridae threads.
To the organizer, if this event were intended to be a regular event, then you guys have a lot lot homeworks to do. So good luck next year! Hope to see 60 contestants instead of 6!
159. 2009-12-12 00:03
Well, to be one of the pageant contestants make him a winner already! Imagine to be included among the Magic 6 instantly! LOL!

They all deserve to be winners 'cos they had the balls to flaunt themselves out there and mighty proud, at that!

We all know no country in Asia is ripe enough to hold such event as something mainstream. Oh well... I really think HONGKONG is the real winner here. Oh, bless. xx

Is it necessary to express this much anger towards such posts you've labelled "racism"? Although it's considered a form of prejudice, the extent's still.. far less than what's happening to the rest of the people in the world, such as violence, oppression and other forms of discrimination.

No doubt the winner has possessed certain qualities that got him through to the end but frankly, it's honest and total disappointment, felt by not only by the locals, Asians in other countries but also even some of the caucasian readers worldwide, regardless of any circumstances given.

Hong Kong isn't considered as a culturally and racially diversified country, compared to Singapore or Australia. Therefore isn't it normal for people to think it's weird when they find out about the outcomes?

now that i see the pic in the profile more clearly, i dont think the american guy would even make the cut in the US, but hey ho, he is in HK, judged by, as someone said here, certified potato queens, with a last minute participations from someone the organisers know from the gym.

thick bridged eyebrow, cross eyed nipple, except for the protein shakes effect and 7 days a week gym, nothing is actually appealing. and he is actually ancient from a beauty pegeantry point of view.

as for racism, no, black, yellow, brown, coloured people didnt gas people, village burning, ethnic cleansing, sabotaging uncivilised 'monkeys', so to complain abt more representative either in the US or HK is not considered racism. whereby, white people, with hundred years old monstrosity from africa to chine, america to australia, no formal apology given, and enjoying the after effect of it while bravely justifying it with whatever means possible, yes, they CAN be called racists.

I think the term "fascism" is more applicable here, isn't it? Still, these people, whether black, yellow, colored or white have to be blown away, eventually. Nonetheless, human beings will never cease to educate themselves so as to move past the tragedies and work towards building peace and harmony in the globalizing society. Same goes for all genders, races and religions. When there's respect, there's peace...

Why is there a height restriction? Why are guys shorter than 5ft 7in excluded? Ridiculous.
171. 2009-12-12 03:12
Any gay HK citizen should be allowed to participate, and the finalists should be chosen based on merrit, and not race. That's how it is done in the civilized world.

Can you imagine if Americans started screaming "No Asians in the Miss USA pageant!" Or the English said "No Hispanics for Mr. England."

It seems only fair that if you are a citizen of a country, you should be awarded equal rights to everyone else from that country.

172. 2009-12-12 04:05
I'm not going to pass any judgement on guys in the competition, or on the eventual winner (not least because I look like the back end of a bus!), but I'm Very surprised that there were only six contestants in such a contest (itself, not something I like or care about).

Only six?!

Hell, no wonder a foreigner won! Even I would have had a chance if I'd entered! How many people would the competition organisers have been prepared to accept? Five? Two?

Not exactly a great event... Oh well, step by step, and all a' that... My HK friends are all Mr HK to Me, anyway...

I agree with most of you. I am shocked that the first Mr. HK is an American. Why not Asian and from HK? This would be different if it was the first gay Mr. America. Then it would not matter. Sorry but Mr. HK especially the first pageant should be Asian. Maybe it's because of affinity for the Asian male but it is what it is.

Love, peace and happiness.

That's crazy, regardless of ethnicity - Joe Leung is far cuter and has a better body IMHO. He's certainly more humble.
175. 2009-12-12 06:39
First and foremost, should not congratulations be in order to the winner, who followed all the rules and won fairly? I believe graciousness is the appropriate human response in these situations. So congratulations to Rick!

Second, I too am disappointed that the winner was not an Asian as we all know that there must have been at least one Asian Hong Konger with an awesome face and body and matching personality who would have represented well. I feel badly that Rick has had to bear the brunt of so much misplaced anger, one that appears to reflect an underlying frustration that gay Asians in Asia are still generally deemed socially unacceptable creatures who are best unseen, much less seen as a potential national symbol. The success of gay pride parades throughout Asia notwithstanding, I can't believe I was the only one surprised that only five gay Asians signed up for beauty pageant duty. It's one thing to embrace other sweaty bodies at a circuit party on the speakers with your sunglasses on; quite another to step forward alone and bare your entire soul and sexuality on a world stage.

The highest commendations go to the five Asian men who entered the competition, but it's irrational to be making Rick a punching bag because fifty other gay Asian Hong Kongers decided not to.

wow, so many replies :) I wonder if a "deeper" issue would have had so many replies :) I'll spend the weekend thinking about this life threatening issue and get back to you on Monday if that's ok with you guys? so, have a lovely weekend

Gosh the number of comments, there must be a PhD thesis in here,it goes to show that if we are not racist, many of us are damn near racist by our obsessive interest in this topic. Yes Obama did win and it is not certain that he was born in America so he may have broken the rules but he is accepted as President (albeit a fading pin-up) by most Americans.
In Australia you could become Prime Minister or a Cabinet Minister even if you were born in Malaysia and were a lesbian (Penny Wong) and you could have relatives living and voting in Australia who did not speak English (but don't get me started on the stupidity of that). So if the Yank fulfilled the criteria better than the locals, he is Mr Cheesecake Hong Kong.
We can only hope that next year more people of all races will be encouraged to enter the competition, and I hope a Norwegian or a Nigerian wins because with the element of anti-Americanism (which must count for a lot in this world) removed, we will see who is truly racist or not.

I think I agree that Mr. HK should be a HK citizen, not necessarily be Chinese. Since HK is an international city, it gives a mult-national image if its.

I think It's kinda unfair to assume the viewers' opinions here do express anti-americanism.. or even racism. Just disappointment by the outcome and lack of participation by the locals.. not problem with his ethnicity alone or Rick himself.
184. 2009-12-12 11:37
Wow - needless to say the winner was cute. I am a bit perplexed though as to an Asian country being represented by a caucasian. Have we ever seen an Aisia Mr Gay USA or UK..? Being an Asian we are a minority within a minority and in my opinion the judges could've put some thought into this. No offence to the winner just airing my opinion.
185. 2009-12-12 12:14
well, i dont think we should be discriminating against ethnicity but i can't deny the winner is well minging lol
186. 2009-12-12 12:37
Why all the fuss? Good god. Hong Kong was a British colony for how many years? Asia does not necessarily mean everyone is Asian! If the locals can't make the cut... then why not have an immigrant step in? Singapore sports' teams are mainly made up of foreign 'talent' but no one complains when they win something at the SEA Games or any other event.
I have lived in Asia most of my life. Japan is home to me. I consider myself local. But I am an American by citizenship and basically Caucasian technically. Does that mean I can't participate in a contest or represent the place that I consider my home simply by reason of my birth? Come on guys... of all the people who should NOT be so narrow minded, gay people should be the ones to open their arms and welcome anyone who is willing to stand up and be proud. Aren't we discriminated against enough... do we need this kind of crap in our own culture? I say NO!

Wow! It's very sad to read all the comments. So guys, let's me get this straight, so an asian girl living in a non asian country can't win any title like Miss America because she was not born and raise there and does not represent the biggest racial group???? What would happend if the guy was white born and raise in HK? It's sad and really make me think!!!!
189. 2009-12-12 13:47
Extremely disappointed!

I think those Asians are cuter. Mr. Gay HK should represent the majority of local gay community.

I really like reading all the diverse comments that have been posted about a caucasian person winning an asian competition. As a caucasian person, it is strange to me to see an American win this asian competition. Asian countries are predominantly populated with oriental asian people. While it is common to see asian guys competing and winning these types of competitions in western society, it seems not the right time for western guys to be winning asian competitions. It is maybe too early for this type of ethnic win to be accepted by asian people yet, I think.
Take care and stay safe.
192. 2009-12-12 15:57
i can't help but wonder if this article would have attracted as much attention if it was more appropriately but boringly titled ' HK resident with different levels of melanin wins HK gay pageant'

193. 2009-12-12 16:09
so much negativity... and to hear such crap like "he's not hot enough" is just absolutely ridiculous and infuriating.

how about this: strap on a pair of balls and nominate yourself next year, then let's see what the comments say.

congratulations to the winner as well as all those brave enough to compete. stand tall, you all have my respect.

HAIL TO THE QUEEN!

Now, do the right thing (what any enlightened monarch would do FOR her country):

ABDICATE THE THRONE.

GIVE BACK THE TIARA.

Do you realize what a LAUGHING STOCK you will make of Hong Kong on the International gay stage when you present your American -not even British- Caucasian pecs and basket while flying the flag of Hong Kong?

(And let's be honest here, you know you wouldn't have a snowball's chance in Kowloon of even placing in the country of your birth and passport).
196. 2009-12-12 17:10
hello how are you all...i hope that i can be one of that contestant soon hehe joke
197. 2009-12-12 17:10
Yeah. should be Hongkie.
198. 2009-12-12 17:32
nice competition..
can a small hobbit guy like me join in ?
hehehe
199. 2009-12-12 17:33
Mr Gay HK participants should be limited to the asian resident of HK. Guys from other parts of the world shouldnt be considered if the competition is strictly following the theme. Its even more ridiculous when an americian won the award. How could he represent HK ? I cant imagine if Mr Singapore is won by a white guy.
200. 2009-12-12 18:02
I believe that any person who was born in Hong Kong, or became a Hong Kong citizen should be allowed to participate in this pageant. I would hate to see that future contestants be discriminated against because they are not Asian. Rick Twombley is in fact not to blame here. Instead, take a look at the organizers of this event. They have created a very sticky situation. I will be surprised if the organizers of Mr. Gay World will allow a non-citizen to represent Hong Kong.
No matter what the job, people should always be chosen based on merit. This should be a global requirement.
In the mean time, please consider the following cases:
Lea Salonga was born in 1971 in the Philippines. She shot to fame for originating the role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon. She was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Miserables on Broadway. She was not discriminated against for being Asian. She got the part based on her talent and popularity.
Penny Wong is a lesbian born in Malaysia. She became a Cabinet Minister in Australia. Australia voted for her, again based on merit, not ethnic background.

Ang Lee On is an Academy Award-winning film director from Taiwan. It doesn’t bother anyone where he was born. Here is an Asian man directing a gay American movie (Brokeback Mountain). No-one accused him of not understanding gay American culture. He made a beautiful movie despite not being gay, or American by nationality.
What about Ichiro Suzuki: Major League Baseball Superstar. He is a Japanese outfielder for the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball team. He became the first Japanese-born everyday position player in the Major Leagues. Or how about Yao Ming: Chinese NBA Basketball Superstar? Yao is one of China's most recognizable athletes, and earn millions (USD). Or even Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao: World Boxing Champion. This Filipino boxer needs no introduction for he is very well-known the world over. None of them reside in their country of origin. They are revered for their talent, and not discriminated against.
Yul Kwon was born in New York, to South Korean immigrants. He recently won $1 million in the popular American TV show “Survivor.” Did anyone say, “Sorry, you just don’t look American?” He won his million fair and square. He is an American citizen, and that is all that matters.
Dat Phan is a Vietnamese American whose family immigrated to the United States when he was a child. He entered NBS’s stand-up comedy competition “The Last Comic Standing”, and he became The Original Winner. Although it was the first competition of its kind, people didn’t say the first winner must be a white guy! He won because he was the best comedian.
Talent and skill, that’s what it’s all about.

I am so extremely dismayed to see the level of racism/hatred expressed here in some of these posts. Its appalling.

While we are united in battling homphobia as a 'gay' family its seems we are divided by prolific racism in the 'human' family.

To many aussies who live in a very culturally diverse (maybe the most diverse in the world) society, the level of extreme resentment as displayed in this forum of a 'resident' who is not ethnically native to a country would be very perplexing.

As pointed out in a previous post, ( Ferribal post #177) even members of our (Aust) government, I am thinking Penny Wong (non aussie born, 'out' as a gay person') who is a senator and representing Australia in Copenhagen on an issue of global warming, (an issue SOOO much more important than a 'gay pageant' ) are given a fair and equal oppurtunity. In the period she has been in government, NOT once have I heard a negative comment towards her ethnic roots or even a slur against her sexuality regardless of her political persausian.

And she is just one example of a representive of our country not born here, but who lives, embraces/adopts this country as her home.

If the winner of any type of competition, be it a pageant, community merit, government election, singing/dancing contest (gay or otherwise) happened to be of Asian heritage or any other race for that matter, I guarantee, hardly an eyebrow would be raised. The winner would be accepted and acknowledged with graciousness........ as it should be.
Should Hong Kong be so different, especially in the gay communtiy ?
Hence this debate to me is sooo two centuries ago, and so vile.

Racism is so alive and kicking in this world, let it not be part of ours.

Whether the winner of this 'contest' (absurd as this competion may be) is the rightful winner in anybodys opinion, the fact is he was voted as the winner, by fellow Hong Kong gay voters.

Whatever your view is (need more Asian participants/ban non-born contestants/disapointed that an Asian didnt win/ hand back the crown) please, think again, and think about whether you are really 'racist' or not.

Its horrible.

And another thing: Those posts that cruelly belittle one of the contestants for not being a 'perfect' body shape,.... well shame on you. I happen to think he looks so sweet and sexy, and given his previous battles for the benefit of our community deserves our respect and love.

Guys, please chill out.

Face it, just like rice queens in the West have their prejudice of Asian men as smooth (forgetting hairy Northern Indians or not treating them as "Asian"), of a feminine -- read: submissive -- demeanour (forgetting Filipino pirates with machetes), and the like, so do potato queens in Asia internalise the idea that the only male ideal is a Caucasian body -- albeit in this case, a smooth, submissive one: of a guy who'll dance on your table semi-nude for a buck.

sorry.. but there's no denying that racism still exists, even in the western society today.. But I doubt it is actually the main issue here.. it's got more to do with how people feel he's just not fully qualified to be a representative from Hong Kong.. ("Hong Kong"er enough). I mean, the Headline of the article already speaks for itself!!! I somehow do empathize with the winner though.

nevertheless some of the remarks have been extremely ignorant and blunt.. especially those bombarded against the contestants... at least they are bold enough to go up the stage.. and the winner sure has a lot of homework to do and work twice as hard to earn people's respect and support..

be kind to others, guys

The winner looks like he should be in a weightlifting comp than a Mr HK. Have I missed its point?

Maybe they don't have to be of Asian descent, but should at least be HK citizens if they plan to be Mr Hong Kong, not just expats.

Lets hope future competions bring in more brave applicants. Six people should be finalists, not the only people in the comp. Maybe some of the models from http://www.spyhenrylau.com/ ? LOL.

Hi, first and foremost, a heartiest Congratulations to Mr. Rick, for clinching the title.

It does not matter whether you're native or expat in HK; you're already a winner by footing forward in this Contest.

Kudos to the other contestants as well, (though l won't go BOOMZ on Billy Leung); you're all a winner in your own capacity.

It is easy to criticize; we all are unique in our own ways, have different opinions + judgments. But cruel comments made on these guys were unfair & only a sadist will think as such.

So, let us give our bros a break; this Contest is new, hence if we lend our support & is well received, who knows it may expand to other regions.

So chill guys, have a heart.

Hugs
Dean

hung888 # 77 has in my view posted the most objective comment. It is disappointing to see that parochialism is the leading sentiment on this topic. Hung is obviously not just a pretty face :o)
216. 2009-12-13 07:54
I don't have a problem with him being white, but I do if that's the only reason he won. Ziggy has a hot little body on him too.....
That being said, alot of Asians fetishize whites and alot of whites have yellow fever.....come on don't be surprised look at this site! If the fella was articulate and talented and looks good in a swimsuit then good on him. If the colour of his skin was the determining factor then we need closer interspection peace from Canada

The show of Mr. gay HK must goes on with just 6 contestants left behind after the initially of almost 20 contestants as furnished by #68.

Hence, no one should be blamed for this undesirable result.

And, my vote go to-------- Jason Tang.

My prediction: Next year there will be even fewer contestants.

Why? Because anybody contemplating entering would understandably be put off for fear of having their physical appearance held up to scrutiny and torn to shreds in a humiliating, demeaning, cruel, and unfair way in forums such as this. I'm sure Fridae is not the only website where this discussion is taking place.

The taunts from the 'peanut gallery' would seem unbearable.

What type of schoolyard behaviour is name calling such as the following written here?:

"ugly".. "chubby" .."ugly Betty" "rather awful".. "all of them are ugly".. "porker" .. (PORKER ??)...."yuck"...."the runners up arent that cute"..... "they are all gross"

Geez, and the list goes on and on.
I wouldnt call those 'comments. I'd call them insults.

"Congratualtions" to all of you (although you didnt have the guts to enter yourselves) for tearing down those brave enough to put all they have in public view. Im sure you were successful in hurting at least one persons feelings. And yes, they do have feelings.

The only positive thing to come from the venomous comments is that it puts in the public forum your true feelings and personality for all to see.

In my view, you are the only' losers' in the aftermath of this competition.

I have seen many Ugly ones lol ...
Only the good looking ones stay in the Big city .. e.g NYC , London , Paris , SanFran etc

Mr Gay HK joining in this debate is rather childish. He should maintain a dignified silence, as any Miss HK/ USA/ etc would. Grow up.
234. 2009-12-13 17:22
I think we can do without some of the racist comments posted. It would have been morally repugnant, as well as unlawful, for the event organisers to exclude contestants on the basis of their ethinic origins. You could imagine the uproar if, for instance, the organisers of Mr Gay USA excluded any Asian Americans from the competition. If you have a beef, it should be with the potato queens who actually voted for the winner. Personally, there is no doubt that the guy on the far left of the picture should have won. He looked good enough to eat.

Good to see that racism, prejudices and bigotry are universal and found even within so-called "stigmatised and discriminated against (sexual) minorities".

How do you expect to be respected and accepted when you share the prejudices of those who ostracised you and when you behave like them?

Where are the talks of equal rights. of tolerance and of "community"? Down the drain with your dignity?

Be seeing you, not in a beauty contest, definitively.

241. 2009-12-13 20:58
I think this is so sad...Other contestants must now be thinking that HK must be located close to the US like Puerto Rico or maybe Hawaii.

However, due to the publicity that comes with the pageant, it is not surprising that many good looking locals would not take the risk of exposing themselves...this is HK.

Rick, maybe you shud take part in Mr Thailand or Mr Singapore next year...;-))
242. 2009-12-13 21:14
Surely, racism in general is not something to be tolerated. However i do agree with TimmyKing on this one. I don't think i'm racist either or have shown any disrespect or insult against caucasians in general

In addition, let me point out again that the organizer and the judges didn't rule out either that no other race against asians should participate in the event. Nobody will go out there to make such silly rules. It's just perplexing to see an expat win the Mr. gay HK title and that a lot of ppl feel he's not "Hong Konger" enough. (THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT!). And i'm sure many people in this forum has shared the same feeling too.

Don't mind me saying this, but being thrown at with such accusations can be really offensive to some of the asians and clearly it doesn't make things any better.

Chill out, people..

sound so weird that Hong Kong citizen not winning for the Mr Gay HK competition....but the award was given away to American !!! the fact had make us confused ! Were the judges blind for those qualifications?
245. 2009-12-14 01:48
Hi boys,
Some of the comments here have really disgusted me… I have to say this issue is nothing to do with RACISM, if you r still trying to link those tow together then u d better to look up in the dictionary for the meaning; and also please looking for the term of “SOCIAL FORMS AND NORMS”. Well! If you r still confused by the words then u need to enroll in an English language school to study hard and to get it right for every time you are going to use the word RACISM in the future!

Play fair with consideration, don’t take something from somebody else’s which is entirely not belongs to you (especially showing off after u got it, it is just pissing off people even more!); also don’t let somebody else to take advantage from you in any circumstances!

ethnocentrism + narcissism = superficiality, shallow, ignorance → humiliate yourself.

Lessons learnt?! Good boys! This thing needs to be wrapped up by now, shall we? Let’s FOCUS ON the issues which can make OUR gay life better for all of US. Such as the gay rights, marriage, EQUAL treatments, etc. still WE ARE the MINORITIES in front of 90% world wide population.

It is a new week beginning…

Love you all, and be good!
246. 2009-12-14 01:53
For those (white, mostly) who are shouting "Racists" at the native inhabitants of HK, who believe that they should be represnted by an Asian....it is worth noting that in its 51 year history, only 5 times has America chosen a non-white Miss USA as far as I can see, (and not one of them from an asian background I believe).
Correct me if I am wrong.
To those white guys using the race card...sort out your own country before you start criticising those Asians, who, understandably enough, would like their own race to represent them.

Many sports/activities allow not only Citizens of the country, but also Permanent Residents, as well as foreigners have been residing in the country for more than certain specific period, to take part.
In a multiracial country, you must not expect the participants to be certain race or from certain continent.
I have to applaud the activity was being a successful one, minus the unreasonable and unfair comments of course. Keep it up.

He is hideous! ...didn't anyone look at his face?
253. 2009-12-14 10:35
What on earth are the pageant officials thinking? If I read the headlines correctly it was a "MR. GAY HONG KONG?" It's not for the fact that Rick is Caucasian, but he should have at least been a citizen or at a minimum a resident of Hong Kong. If the pageant official have decided otherwise then Ziggy should have won. The judges need to get their eyes checked. Not only does Ziggy have a better looking face, he has a much better body. In my opinion, not only should this go down in history as the first gay pageant, it should also go down in history as the pageants biggest blunder ... an American wins MR. GAY HONG KONG? Go figure!
254. 2009-12-14 10:51
I agree with you on soooo many levels, jupiter101.
255. 2009-12-14 11:26
I have been so disgusted by the negativity and the intolerance of so many of the people on this web site, i have decided to delete my account. It has been eye-opening to see the real side of the Asian gay community. I also wanted to say to post #252....who are you to talk?
And to Dynhoyw.....I didn't want to post here, as embarrasing others publicly isn't my style, but I'm not sure you will get the message i sent, as I will no longer have this account......
I really find some of your comments (actually, ALL of your comments) concerning the Mr. Gay HK competition to be ignorant, and they spread intolerance and hatred...aimed at a person and its organizers, whom I assume you've never even met???
I agree with one of the other posters that at no point did I see this competition billed as a "beauty pageant." Everything I read said it was a chance to find an ambassador to be a strong leader for the world-wide gay community (NOT just the ASAIN gay community, mind you). I will say however, that the author of this article did not choose flattering pictures of ANY of the contestants. However, after looking at the winners profile, I found him to be EXTREMELY handsome and charming-looking, totally befitting any "beauty pageant."
The only posts I saw from this brave guy were dignified, educated and speaking toward tolerance and unity. In no way defensive or accusatory. And you, dynhoyw, told him to 'GROW UP?" What Bizarro world do you live in, sir? You will spout vile judgements, and support the hateful comments of others, but when someone has something honest and worthwhile to say, you ridicule them? Shame on you. Shame on ALL of you.
In your "About Me," dynhoyw, you state you are Kind and considerate. (I've seen on some of you others profiles "loving" "educated" "smart" "accepting")!!!!!!! I have seen no evidence of that on this site.

Good day

Mr Gay HK turn out to be an American? Isn't it the applicant should be 1) Asian 2) HK Citizen 3) Gay ?

If the contest is open for everyone to apply then the title of the competition should be "Mr Gay" Organized in HK.

258. 2009-12-14 13:50
i dont know... is there mr. gay bali???
259. 2009-12-14 14:13
Im a potato lover. Rick could win my heart but honestly, Ziggy wins my vote!
260. 2009-12-14 15:36
Gays focus on age race and looks again.
261. 2009-12-14 16:03
Oh nooooooo, willowtree has deleted his account. What ARE we going to do without him?????
As for MR GAY HK, he should do the honourable thing and resign his crown, in view of the obvious discontent with his having "won" the title.
This is boring me now. There are more important things to worry about.
262. 2009-12-14 16:21
Gosh, I'm sure Im not the only one who feels that all the contestants are beautiful. If ( a big IF ) hypothetically this competition was based on beauty, and I was a judge, they would ALL win! A draw !

1.Joe: wonderful angular features, gymnast's body.

2.Jason: Chunky, strong tanned body, handsome amiable face.

3. Billy: face of an angel, so cute, and look at those legs!! To die for.

4. Gilbert: wow, the typical gorgeous boy-next-door look. So naturally appealing in every aspect.

5. Ziggy: ahh a heart-breaker. Handsome, cheeky, confident, with a body that turns your head.

6. Rick: muscled body, chiselled features, great smile.

How could I ever choose.? I couldnt.
They are all beautiful.

10/10 for bravery
10/10 for dignity
10/10 for beauty

Guys you all WIN. You are ALL so beautiful.
That what makes life so wonderful. Everybody different, everbody beautiful in their own way.

Congratualtions. ;)

For the most, majority just aren't ready to stand out and be outed. To be visible in a public eye as a gay person. I read through the comments and understood from one of the commentors here that original there were many more, but they dropped out largely due to them not ready to face the limelight as an out gay person.

As such faced with a sudden lack of contestants, the organisers have to make do with the most of what they can.

I don't know them, but as I worked with similar gay "pageants" before, I understand what might have happened.

For those of you dissing about how "ugly" so and so is... and why an "american won MR Gay Hongkong"... ask yourself this... would you dare to stand up in the spotlight and be ogled and dissed(at the same time) by countless of sharp witted bitches? Would you dare to stand in front and be totally upfront and open about your sexuality?

It is so easy to sit behind the comfort of your home and computer and bitch endlessly about how "ugly" they are. Ask yourself again... do you have the courage to do what they had done?

The winner must have qualified at the basic requirements to even enter the competition in the first place, and the fact that he was American doesn't bother me the least.

264. 2009-12-14 18:40
he couldn't win in the U.S. so..he decided to compete in HK...he won due to lack of contestants....
265. 2009-12-14 18:55
#263.... the bottom line is, the winner cannot represent Mr Gay HK because he is simply not a local HK born asian! He is not even 1/10 of asian origin in his blood!

To #265:

I know what you mean. So the question we need to ask should be why was he even admitted in the contest in the first place?

Quite frankly I don't care if he was from Mars, though I do admit to be slightly disappointed that it was not a native guy(regardless of race) born there.

268. 2009-12-14 19:31
I don't like the fact that an American stripper on a work visa gets this title, because of the fascination of judges -- Asian judges, mind you -- with everyhting American, including what a perfect gay male body should look like.

After all, from a European perspective, the US are just an ex-UK colony that managed to get away with the rebellion (while Australia and Canada had to go step by step in disentangling themselves from the deadly embrace of the British Empire viper, and are nevertheless much less racist, oppressive societies than the US).

But, for those racists here who insist on "blood" and "Asian" -- do you really mean what you say? Would you have fewer problems if the person selected was a Filipino or a person from Ludhiana or Karachi (of very much "Asian" everything, including "blood") who is a legal resident in the Stinking-Not-Fragrant Harbour of Xianggang?

Or are you bigots?

Anyway...
269. 2009-12-14 19:39
Seriously you guys need to chill.

He won. He's American. SO?

GET OVER IT!!!!

Listen to you lot arguing, snipping and bitching over nationality, racism and goodness knows what else.

Let me ask you again, who else here have the courage to do what the 6 have done?? Especially those of you native to Hongkong.

I'm really surprised at the amount of pettiness abound over such an issue.

270. 2009-12-14 20:01

The second one from the right wears footwear and all others are barefooted. That means he probably takes care of himself in every respect and won't leave you with a "memento" you'd rather not have (like crabs or clap).

And he is cute (although perhaps of an age as ripe as the Yank's one), discreet (note the goggles), expressive (note the smirk) and the body's just fine.
274. 2009-12-14 21:20
I don't mind if he was American and i think he was cute, I guess the organizer did not have a limit on contestant nationality so anyone can win!

If they wanted to find a true Asian i guess they would have op for a stick Hong Kong Asian men only. But it title is Mr Gay Hong Kong....
or should it be Mr Gay Hong Kong Visitors?
275. 2009-12-14 21:54
I hope Mr gay shanghai will be an Asain guy!

Hi ALL !

I CAN'T HANDLE UNFAIRNESS !

No offence to rick. Hes stunning! So ALL from HK and the Hispanic!

This is not OSLO remenber !

It's grossely unfair. This is nor Mr. Gay Universe Pageant.

Now realy. All the Guys are winners!

Hong Kong's first Mr. Gay Pageant and the area is going to send an American to OSLO.

It's water under the bridge. Sincerely hope the organizers read all the comments.

Allow only a native inhabitant from each country/international zone to represent his country, or a person staying there in permanence.

Imagine 192 Amaricans rock up in Oslo. Each representing their own Int zone.

PLEASE GUYS !..............................................

I guess all gay men are self-conscious about beauty.

And for the Asian gay man, it's hard not to feel challenged and territorial when a White guy wins a beauty contest in your home country.

It's not as if gay Asian men haven't grown up watching adverts implicitly telling then "white is better", or that that Internet doesn't predominantly sells the image of the all-American Sean Cody as the model porn star.

What are people supposed to think?
281. 2009-12-15 03:46
It's all very well to talk about trying a positive image of gay people in HK... In which case, what was the swimwear section for? Last I hear, the Nobel Peace Prize people don't have a Speedo section to get through. It just seems to reinforce the Same Old Stereotypes... (Sigh...)

Anyway, the point is, with the First such contest in HK, yes, there was more 'weight' on the contest than subsequent years will have. So who wins it, as the 'best' gay HKer? A white foreigner. In an ideal world - meh, sure, why not? But in the Real world, it's a bad result; it's patronising for cries of "Racist!" to be flung up for saying that.

In the bigger picture, if such a trite contest Must be held, then at the very least, a 'true' HKer Should have won. Now, of course, various White guys will feel glad, 'knowing' that this result shows how 'inferior' Asian men are...

I think I'll just wait for Brain of Asia instead, rather than something decided with a swimwear section. Even though I'd Also have had a sizable chance of winning Mr HK - well, a 1 in 6 or so chance anyway...! ;-)

He should at least have held a genuine resident status, forget his race but he is a little odd looking...

Why do I seem to be the only person who thinks that muscle is actually quite nasty unless we are talking people who play sport and are fit because of that instead of hours working in the gym to build those dreadful disco tits...

I hope no one ends up with attitude like Willowtree, turning his back and walking away from gay asian community like that (as clearly stated in his last comment #255 such as "seeing true side of gay asian community" and cancelling his account on Fridae) and ended up being the sour and bitter one. What a crude way to generalize and wrap up things.

I'm not going to accuse him of anything but he's sure not an example for any of us to follow..

I have also thought that Mr Gay Hong Kong should have a Chinese face, but I realize now that while I am no racist, I have strong racial concepts of people, perhaps having been brought up in Malaysia where there are distinct boundaries dividing the ethnic groups. After listening to Brian Leung on RTHK2's We are Family LGBT talk show in Hong Kong, I think it is fine for an American expat living in Hong Kong to represent the city at the Mr Gay World pageant. Hong Kong has many different ethnic groups staying there all their lives. What if a non-Chinese citizen or permanent resident of Hong Kong had entered the contest and won? Should he not have the right to represent Hong Kong? It is not as if Rick Twombley is only visiting Hong Kong on and off, but have been staying there for 4 years and should be familiar with the local scene. If all he knows about Hong Kong is Lan Kwai Fong, then now is the time to learn all he can about the larger Hong Kong society and pick up some Cantonese along the way!
294. 2009-12-16 17:27
hmm, lots of interesting comments glad its a free world to speak out .. anyway, its so embarassing as an American that that particular American boy won, guess there should be some Chinese caligraphy writing or poetry category added after the speedo competition to make the Mr. Gay HK criteria a bit more strigent, you can add a category to test his knowledge of the Hong Kong history or EX Com members or cooking receipes of Hong Kong Dim Sum

anyway, I think as a former Dentist (now turned Polo Playboy) Billy should have won cause he has the best smile and dental work and track record as a brave HK man

finally, if you guys are interested in a real american boy with class, watch Saturday Night Live where my little cousin Taylor Lautner is hosting... the kid isn't gay, but my gay friends all think he's hotter than Mr. Gay HK now and he is willing to demonstrate his karate skills that he learned from Fabiano's Karate School in Holland, Michigan-- a real American hottie and totally open minded with his gay relatives

Previous post:

"These comments make Hong Kong sound like the most racist, intolerant, and ignorant place on the face of the planet!"

Guess what? IT IS. Just step outside your door and ride the MTR if you're white, black, red or brown and see how the average HK citizen treats you.

5 things I'd like to say:

1) Seeing is believing.. Do not blindly believe what others say. See for yourself not based on false and groundless accusations, as well as stereotyping, categorizing and generalizing, but based on what brings clarity and peace.

2) Victory creates hatred, defeat creates suffering. Those who are wise strive for neither victory nor defeat

3) Words have the power to heal or destroy. Be careful with your choice of words.

4) Praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and sorrow come and go like the wind. To be happy, rest like a great tree in the midst of them all.

5) A day spent judging another is a painful day. A day spent judging yourself is a painful day. You don't have to believe your judgments; they're simply old habits.

I honestly think you can't blame the American, can you? Especially if the contest did not specify citizenship to be one of the criterion to decide who is Mr Gay HK.

If there was a word of protest, then shouldn't it be directed to the organisers instead of the people who took part?

Plus, if we were to read carefully enough, it was based on a vote system and the people and the judges voted for the American who has stage presence due to his background of being an acrobat, dancer and singer.

I honestly think the comments on and teeming with racism are irrelevant to the article, especially since it seems that this was a decision made by those present (and online) in Hong Kong itself.

bla bla bla bla bla. and bla bla bla bla. mmmm i think bla bla bla bla. in my opinion bla bla bla bla. we have another bigger issues to think and talk and do. its just a pageant contest. six pack and muscle thats and a bit of boner inside judges underpants. thats all.
303. 2010-01-10 14:59
Close your eyes, throw a stone and chances are u will hit a handsome gay guy in HK..... I don't see any of them up there on stage. Does not do justice to HK at all.....esp. if a foreigner wins it!

For all you know, some pretty thing from Costa Rica will be the next Miss HK....
304. 2010-01-10 19:34
My question is simply this, how and where were the contestants chosen, I saw no notices for contestant entries or nominations posted in any of the gay clubs in H.K. I'm sorry and I may be wrong but if there is a Mr Gay Hong Kong Contest shouldn't the gay community be notified before hand and have a part in the selection of the contestants. Then there's the venue in which the contest was held should this not have been an organized event that would accommodate more than just a few hundred of the community, where as it turns out it was held at "Venues" a straight club, "which if you have ever been you know that this place is to small to hold more than a couple of hundred" that allows gay oganizations to meet there as private functions, yet due not openly advertise or promote the gay community. Now if this was a miens to promote the gay community why were they not more involved if they had been there may have been many more "brave souls willing to show their wares". This is just my opinion and I apologize if it offends any one but I believe we as a community should have been allowed to be more involved.
305. 2010-01-12 07:42
Wow, what a load of crap, an American, and he isn't even attractive. I am caucasian and that to me is a slap in the face to all the hot Asian men who were in the contest. What next? An American for Mr Gay Canada,,, man I would be so pissed at that.
