LGBT map in South Korea taken offline

Elements of LGBT community in South Korea furious after removal of map showing LGBT-friendly venues in the country

Over the weekend it transpired that South Korea's Korea Pink Map, had been taken down by the Communication Standards Commission, without explanation. The move comes just weeks after the country's blocking of LGBT apps came to light.

Korea Pink Map claims to be the largest website for regional gay businesses in the country, and was already banned for use BY people under the age of 19.

Although illegal porn sites are often blocked in South Korea, the recent move has enraged LGBT netizens particularly because the LGBT content was removed from the Youth Protection Act in 2004.

One LGBT residing in Seoul told Gay Star News: "There are no laws against homosexuality in South Korea, so there is no reason to block a site that simply lists venues. It is utterly insane and clear discrimination."

Homosexuality is legal in South Korea. However, conservative attitudes remain and traditional christian groups hold a lot of power. Additionally, male citizens are drafted in to military service where being gay could lead you to being dishonorably discharged or spending a year in jail.

I had no idea that South Korea still lives in the darkest Middle Ages ... are women allowed to work there? Or is there confusion with North Korea? So sad!

Just use a web time machine site

If the original map has porn links, etc. then it's understandable why it was blocked

Pha, yes they do still live back then. I have had a couple of Korean acquaintances actively start avoiding and ridiculing me for hinting that I've dated guys in the past. It's really quite sad.

Anyone noticed Korean is just one letter short of Koran? ;)
Coincidentally, it's the only non-muslim country to be heavily affected by MERS...hmmm..can we say, karma's a b*ch only if you are?

I had a one-year contract to teach in South Korea. I bailed out after 4 months because of the virulent anti-gay sentiment. The 'christians' are pretty bad too. There's a pop-up church on every street-corner, and the happy-face 'christians' accost you on the street or in the mall and ask you to go to their church. Except in one small gay area of Seoul, gay people are in hiding and live in fear. I'm not buying any more Korean products. Goodbye Samsung and LG, hello world.

Mers? What a hideous thing to suggest. I'm sure mers avoid "the gays". Weird.

Any more Korean products? It's far too late for that evidently. In fact, you're to blame. Just you, no one else.

Lol

What ever happened to intellect?

Far better in the days when only the intelligent gays dared to come out.

I don't know, but if there is no law against homosexuality then the gay businesses affected might sue the Commission...

GTi, I'm afraid you've got me confused for you. I don't own a samsung phone...or any other Korean products.

And I'm no pseudo-intellectual. =) Just factually stating that Korean society,at the rate it's going, is falling apart. Albeit in a joking way, of course. ;)

No love. You're the confused one. Read comment five.

Btw, I don't find wishing illness on anyone funny.

Preach. Religious extremists do that to us all the time...my comment is already very, very mild. Esp when compared to the vitrol they spew.

South Korean government censoring internet.
So I use proxy.
There is no LGBT discrimination or oppose discrimination law in Korea.
For me, I do agree with this article. There is no law that prohibit to access LGBT websites but Korean government banned LGBT websites.
Korean Christian group is highly conservative, most of them hates LGBT community alot. Also they are way too powerful. They've been involving politics so many times.

And LOL @ Pha
We aren't North Korea. That's f**kin stereotypes. Korean women are fine. They work and study harder than any other Korean man.

MERS?
It's been over! All Mers patients returned their home.

@Sylnir
I'm so sorry if some Korean person spill your sexuality to other people. But not all Koreans spill someone's sexuality.
My st8 friends knew my sexuality but they kept mouth shut for me.
Please don't be upset. And I don't usually generalize other country. I hope you do the same like me.

@Emochick
Long long time ago, some caucasian visited Goryeo. They pronounce Goryeo as Korea.
And I don't know that the f**k you talkin about. we aren't related with Koran or Muslims.

@Pascalj: Yes, it really was unfortunate that the Koreans I knew did that to me, and I do my best to not generalize a whole nation for it(Even though sometimes it gets difficult), trying to give others the benefit of the doubt. I actually am friends on Facebook with a Korean singer who has shown to be LGBT supportive in some capacity after the US Supreme Court made its recent decision regarding same-sex marriage.
13. 2015-07-30 22:47
@Pascalj: if I offended the good ones amongst you, I apologize. But I won't apologize at how your (extremist) christians treat the gay community in Korea. They're almost as 'good' as the muslims in that aspect...and equally over-sensitive.
So
Like you said, they're influential and powerful...ever considered that they are that way because they're ALLOWED to?
14. 2015-07-31 04:05
Don't hide extremist in brackets emochick!

Embrace all religions they are dying out.

Stamp on the extremists however.

You aren't that far from being part of the solution.
15. 2015-08-02 07:12
Really? Solution of what? Do you mean those religious nazis are planning some 'Final Solution' to the 'Atheist' problem? Wow...apparently, i've woken up to 1939 and not 2015.

Well...excuse me while I fart in their Hitler-wannabe faces! Bottom line: basically, i'm a nice person. So if i'm a b*ch to anyone, they have to ask themselves why.

Also, I saw for myself how some Christians (incl Catholics) actually accept and even embrace their gay kids / friends. If one is sharp enough to observe, the only places gay partnerships are allowed and recognized to date are all Christian ones. For me, the proof is in the pudding, so this is proof that Christianity by itself is NOT our enemy. It's those who use the Christianity name for certain agendas that give rise to the now-notorious caricature of the 'homophobic christian' .
