Watch: short film ‘Listen’

Listen tells the story of a government worker, who spends his time monitoring civilian phone-calls, becomes inspired by a series of conversations.

Watch the short movie and a short Q and A with the director, Liang Hu.

Could you tell us more about yourself?

Originally from China, I moved to the UK in 2004 when I was 24. ‎I am a graduate from Brighton Film School's filmmaking course. I made my first short film James while I was there, which was screened at a few film festivals in Europe and the US.

How were you inspired to make this short film?

My coming out to my parents and the aftermath inspired me to make Listen. The government surveillance setting is based on the current state of privacy in the world.

Why did you decide to use English dubbing?

Yes, because the film was to be made in England and I couldn't find suitable actors who can speak Mandarin, I decided not to show anyone speaking in the film and finish it with an English dub. It's a compromised solution, I hope it works. A lot of Japanese anime are dubbed in English, right?

What is your next project?

I'm working on a non-verbal documentary about Brighton in my spare time. I have shot quite a lot of footage, but still need more, so it's going to take some time to finish. I'm also writing two short film scripts and hoping to shoot them early next year.
