Teens, twinks and twenty-somethings rule the screen this week!
From Cashback to Disturbia to Knocked Up, the best films this week star young up-and-coming actors (Shia LaBeouf, Sean Biggerstaff, Katherine Heigl) in everything from erotic dramas to thrillers to comedies.
First up, we have Cashback, an erotic drama about a supermarket worker (twinky Sean Biggerstaff) who finds respite from his boring job by fantasizing about the beautiful girls who shop at the supermarket. The hot babes whom he has his eyes on include the gorgeous sexpuss Irene Bagach and porcelain beauty Emilia Fox. For pure eye candy, put your money on Cashback.
Also worth catching is Disturbia, a teenage thriller starring fast-rising 21-year-old star Shia LaBeouf (Transformers). Shia plays a teenager who suspect his neighbour of murdering young women after spying on the latter over several nights. Released months ago in the US, Disturbia took everyone by surprise by staying on top of the US box-office for three straight weeks!
Finally, for the best comedy of the summer season, we strongly recommend Knocked Up — about a rotund slacker (Seth Rogen) who accidentally impregnates a beautiful career gal (29-year-old Katherine Heigl of Grey's Anatomy) and has to face up to his responsibilities.
Also in cinemas this week are two made-in-Singapore films, Gone Shopping and Becoming Royston. But to be honest, the homemade movie we're waiting for is Royston Tan's comedy on getai singers, 881, which is scheduled to be released on Singapore's National Day.
Well, that's it from us, folks. Till next week, enjoy!

STOPPING TIME AND
TURNING BACK THE CLOCK
We had a delightful time in this past two weeks at the Fridae Private Previews with three excellent films that are thought-provoking, cleverly-shot and entertaining — all at the same time.
In Cashback, an artist comtemplates the idea of freezing a moment in time to recover a lost love. Inspired by an award-wining short film, this British movie is a quirky and amusing look at philosophies of contemporary romance.
In Poltergay, married life turns shaky and spooky at the same time, when a couple moves into an old house that is shared by a bunch of queens — who are not just lethally bitchy — but really dead! >> READ Fridae Lifestyle Movie Review
And don't miss the French movie La Vie en Rose about the dramatic rise and fall of the legendary French songstress Edith Piaf, played by the talented Marion Cotillard who brilliantly captured the spirit of the singer's tragic talent and relived her obssessive life of glory and decadence. >> READ Fridae Lifestyle Movie Review

You may have seen Cashback's steamy movie poster: A beautiful girl (Irene Bagach) with the perfect pout and champagne-glass breasts stripped down to her panties. She is standing in the middle of a supermarket aisle, holding a half-filled basket, staring almost directly at you. In the cinema lobbies of Singapore, it's not uncommon to see cinema patrons stopping to stare back at her — and drooling.
Cashback is certainly a sexy film, especially for lesbian and bisexual viewers. The story revolves around an art student (Sean Biggerstaff) who works the late-night shift at a supermarket. Bored with his job, he imagines that he can freeze time, undress the pretty female shoppers and sketch them. As he does so, he ruminates deeply on the nature of beauty, love and art.
Written and directed by Sean Ellis, this is the extended version of his short film which was nominated for the Best Short Film Oscar last year. Cashback is art meets porn, FMR art magazine meets FHM men's magazine, Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees music video meets Girls Gone Wild. The combination is both pleasurable and odd, but you do get a sense of what sort of fantasies festers in a young heterosexual man's mind.
Admittedly, some of these women are stunningly beautiful and voluptuous. So dykes and bis have quite a flesh parade to feast their eyes on. For the gay men, you might wish to note that Sean Biggerstaff (what a hot name!) was the Bambi-eyed Quidditch captain in Harry Potter 1 and 2.
For pure loin-stirring pleasures, Cashback is worth your cash.

Disturbia |
Director: D J Caruso
Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Sarah Roemer, David Morse, Carrie Anne-Moss |
. |
|
|
Fast rising star Shia LaBeouf is really on a roll these days. His movie Transformers was a huge worldwide hit, and Disturbia — released in the US a few months before Transformers — also generated surprisingly big business for such a small film.
In Disturbia, Shia plays a troubled teenager who is under house arrest after punching his teacher. The cops have attached a tracking device to his ankle, which stops him from going more than 100 feet from his front porch.
Bored with being at home, Shia begins to spy on his neighbours — especially the hot babe (Sarah Roemer) who's frequently sunbathing in her backyard, and the weird middle-aged guy (David Morse) who's always entertaining young women in his house. When a few young women are reported missing, Shia begins to suspect that David may be responsible for the crimes...
Disturbia plays like a teen version of Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller Rear Window where the hero is observing and piecing together the whole crime scene from his room. Although the premise is clearly unoriginal, Disturbia is quite clever in its use of up-to-date technology such video cameras, cellphone cameras and other gadgets popular with teenagers, to tell the story.
Teenagers will definitely enjoy this tight, well-acted thriller that's clearly targeted at them. For the rest of us, let's just say there are worst ways of spending two hours of your life.

Knocked Up |
Director: Judd Apatow
Cast: Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Martin Starr |
. |
|
|
Writer-director Judd Apatow must be one of the freshest talents in Hollywood these days. His hit debut film The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) was a genuinely funny and sweet comedy that boosted comedian Steve Carrell's career overnight. Judd's sophomore effort Knocked Up is — believe it or not — even funnier and sweeter than the first.
The story begins with Seth Rogen, an overweight slacker who spends a lot of his time with videogames and pornography. One evening, he meets the gorgeous career girl Katherine Heigl (the babe from Grey's Anatomy) in a bar. And although her standards are normally high when she's sober, they are drastically lowered when she's very drunk.
Seth and Katherine end up having a one-night stand — and as the title tells you, she gets pregnant. Contrary to what many a modern girl might do, Katherine decides to stay positive and keep the baby. But that means that Seth, the baby's father, would have to grow up as well and face up to his responsibilities...
What makes Knocked Up so terrific is the strong vein of realism running through the script, direction and acting. All the characters are completely genuine, believable and identifiable — even as they deliver their gags and punch-lines. Many scenes, such as Katharine's sister (Leslie Mann) and her husband (Paul Rudd) arguing, feel so realistic that you can almost imagine yourself in the characters' shoes.
Anyone who appreciates witty, smart and humane comedies should catch this. Knocked Up is quite simply a knockout.

Gone Shopping |
Mandarin, Malay, Tamil and English with English and Chinese subtitles
Director: Wee Li Lin
Cast: Kym Ng, Sonya Nair, Adrian Pang, Aaron Kao, Rizman Putra, Selena Tan
[Charity Film Premiere] |
. |
|
|
Gone Shopping is the debut feature of Singapore filmmaker Wee Li Lin, who's more famous for her award-winning short films like Autograph Book (2003) and Norman on the Air (1997).
Shot almost entirely in the popular shopping malls of Singapore, Gone Shopping is an ambitious satire of Singaporeans' obsession with shopping. Every Singaporean, it seems, is trying to find the meaning of their lives in shopping malls — from the lonely disillusioned tai tai (Kym Ng) to the bored office worker (Aaron Kao) to the cross-dressing crook (Rizman Putra).
Yet despite its intriguing and original premise, Gone Shopping is simply not engaging enough to carry its message across. Oftentimes, it is neither dramatic nor insightful — just slow-paced and boring. None of the characters is appealing enough for us to care about them.
Certain parts of the movie are strong (such as the sex talk among the shop assistants and the climactic conclusion), as is the terrific score by musician Joe Ng. Director Wee Li Lin, however, certainly has ambition and potential, and we look forward to her sophomore effort

Becoming Royston |
Mandarin and English with English subtitles
Director: Randy Ang
Cast: Alvin Neo, Oon Shu An, Tay Kay Chin, William Chua |
. |
|
|
Yet another Singapore film, Becoming Royston revolves around a teenage boy (Alvin Neo) who dreams of becoming a famous filmmaker like Royston Tan.
Growing up in a small fishing village, he desperately wants to escape his humdrum existence. He finally runs away to the city where he finds work in a shabby video store in a shopping mall. One evening, he meets the sexy and dangerous Shu An Onn who encourages him to work towards his dreams...
Directed by first-time director Nicholas Chee, Becoming Royston was shown in short episodes on the Internet and has only now been given a full theatrical release. And as much as we want to like this low-budget indie film, we find it very hard to. The plot is dismally predictable and the characters are one-note. Direction and acting leave a lot to be desired, while the cinematography is amateurish.
Not recommended.
