Did you join us last weekend as we made history with the third annual Pink Dot rally? We had a great time there meeting up with friends old and new, and soaking up the laid back picnic atmosphere at Hong Lim Park. The next major LGBT event in Singapore will be in August but we’ll always have the movies in the meantime.

Our pick for the week is 13 Assassins, a remake of a samurai flick directed by Takashi Miike. The film is a tribute to the jidaigeki classics and their directors and at the same time is infused with Miike’s ultraviolent sensibilities.

If you’re looking for a summer comedy that involves a bunch of slackers having misadventures while spewing cusswords, dropping the F-bomb, making sexual innuendos and generally misbehaving, Your Highness is the film for you. On the plus side, we’ve never seen a slacker comedy done in a sword and sorcery setting...

In The Beaver, Mel Gibson plays a man who deals with his personal issues by wearing a sock puppet on his hand and insisting that everyone interact with The Beaver and not him. Is it a comedy? A melodrama? A subtle allegory on the craft of acting? Find out with us!

If you’re looking for a summer comedy that involves a bunch of slackers having misadventures while spewing cusswords, dropping the F-bomb, making sexual innuendos and generally misbehaving, and you’d rather watch it in Mandarin, Treasure Inn is the film for you. Directed by Wong Jing, the king of crass comedies, this wuxia spoof is less crass than his usual 80s fare but has far better production values.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK
13 Assassins

Such heavy films would seem like foreign territory for the punk rock sensibilities of Japanese cinematic bad boy Takashi Miike, a man who has built his cult career on giddy, eccentric exploitation films. But even bad boys want respectability, and Miike no less. What better way than in taking on the old masters and hopefully trying to surpass them? Miike apes the masters with mixed results in this revival of the "cruel period piece".
