4 arrested for abusing and injecting men with HIV blood in holland

A case which involves a group of four HIV-positive gay men - who allegedly raped victims lured on the Internet, drugged them and infected them with the HIV virus - has shocked the Netherlands and gay communities worldwide.

In a highly unusual and controversial case which made national and international headlines last week, Dutch authorities have arrested four men suspected of deliberately infecting gay men with HIV.

The matter came to light last Wednesday, when police said they had arrested three seropositive gay men two weeks ago after four victims, men aged 25 to 50, went to the police. According to police and prosecutors, eight more victims have come forward since the case was publicised.

Victims have alleged that they were drugged at the sex parties organised by the men and injected with HIV-contaminated blood taken from the organisers.

Three of the four HIV-positive men in the northern Dutch city of Groningen, where the alleged crimes took place, have been charged with rape and "premeditated severe assault." The men could face a maximum penalty of 16 years in prison.

Prosecution spokesman Paul Heidanus said that the men would not be charged with attempted murder "because of a Supreme Court ruling that found AIDS should no longer be seen as an inevitably fatal disease, but rather a chronic illness."

Two of the men - a couple aged 48 and 33 - have admitted that they arranged dates with gay men through Internet chat rooms. At the parties, they secretly spiked the drinks of the victims with GHB, commonly known as the "date rape drug," sometimes in combination with ecstasy.

"The motive to do this was the 'kick,' and the feeling that unsafe sex is 'pure,'" a police chief said at a news conference.

The fourth suspect, who is not suspected of involvement in the rapes, would face drugs charges for allegedly selling "a considerable amount of drugs," including Ecstasy and GHB, an intoxicant that is sometimes known as a "date rape" drug, police said in a statement.

"The victims said they had had been made helpless or unconscious and then abused," a police statement said. "They had... involuntary and unsafe sex with one or more of the suspects."

Expressing shock and disgust, Henk Krol, the editor of a homosexual magazine titled Gaykrant, said: "These people were drugged, it's therefore rape, pure and simple. It's shameful, disgusting and terrifying. Those who did this are crazy."

"That homos organise orgies is nothing new, but this is something else. This is unimaginable," said Frank van Dalen, the president of a gay rights group called COC, was quoted as saying.

A judge on May 16 ordered the suspects be held for 90 days as the investigation is still ongoing. Police said they did not rule out further arrests, and urged other victims to come forward or to contact a help line to receive HIV testing.

Yikes! this is one of the most disturbing stories I have heard in a reallly long time.
3. 2007-06-06 20:59
I echo Henk Krol's comments....those who did this are crazy...BEASTS...
4. 2007-06-06 21:32
WTF?!?! This is so wrong!!! We should be helping and protecting each other out and not infecting the community! What were those bastards thinking?!?! This is so fucking wrong! I'm so discombobulated right now!
5. 2007-06-06 22:43
Sheet...wot are they thinking??:( As thou the society is not discriminating gays enuf...oh come on!!!
6. 2007-06-06 22:57
I am deeply shocked this happened in my country.I thought the dutch where the one to show the world how to handle the gay matter in a descent way!!I wish those guys a slow and painfull death and may they rot in hell.
7. 2007-06-06 23:13
anybody or has the paper report anything on them, in the sense of their motive?
8. 2007-06-06 23:47
OK. I am going to play the "devil's advocate" here. There is no doubt that the men who drugged the individuals and then infected the unsuspecting victims are heinous criminals. BUT, what concerns me is also the drug culture that has infiltrated certain segments of the gay community. The combination of these "recreational" drugs coupled with orgies and group sex, not to mention those individuals within the community who engage in sex with multiple partners and then do not take precautions or get tested on a regular basis, but, prefer to look the other way and assume they are "clean" will also lead to similar outcomes, i.e. gay men who become infected as a result of sex with multiple partners while under the influence of drugs, although less dramatic and unfortunately somehow more acceptable with the gay community.

These guys are part of a hard-core gay sub culture that has disappeared so far down into the fog of drugs and sex that they have literally lost touch with the rest of society. Injecting others is their way of creating more of their own tribe. The saddest thing is that there are also other gays who choose to sero-convert, in order to belong to this tribe. No point in trying to get your head around it -- just make sure you don't join them. Having said all that -- it's worthwhile noting that being HIV is regarded medically now as a chronic disease, not a death sentence -- but still -- why would anyone choose to be sick ????

There's a MAJOR difference between voluntary infection parties, where healthy individuals, for whatever warped reasons known only to themselves, choose to have unsafe sex with HIV+ partners, and being DRUGGED, RAPEd and worse of all, INJECTED with tainted blood. This is a very serious premeditated crime.

The drug and sex culture is known. It may be reckless and morally questioned, but so is everyone dying of old age or by accidents. But that does not mean anyone can put a gun to your head and pull the trigger!

It is truly sad that there are vengeful vicious people out there who do harm to others. It is not necessarily a gay thing. Just becos they were caught does not mean the st8 population is not hurting the masses too.

Evil is a human condition. Just too bad it has to happen and the gay lifestyle be made the scapepsyche for it.

I don't know what to say :( I was dumb founded when I read the title of this news article. This sort of thing is so ridiculous and sad. But I am sure it happens too in the straight society or our society. There has been a case, which happened in Australia recently that a man with HIV infection passed on the disease to four innocent women. He is now serving his time behind the steel bar but too late those ladies have to live their tough lifes with HIV.
13. 2007-06-07 05:46
A similar story hapens in my home town Adelaide, Australia whereby an HIV positive men lured unsuspected victim through Gaydar and exposed approximately 8 men to the potentially lethal virus. I am interested finding out his motives, but one of the reason is anger and revenge. I have to admit, it is very very sick thing to do.
14. 2007-06-07 07:51
Gosh... This is disturbing news...
15. 2007-06-07 09:40
Just the other day I was having a discussion with all my sistas regarding the trend of sex parties in Asia and the number of HIV rate among people like us had risen sharply.

AND NOW there is such a disturbing news regarding such parties. I hope pppls around our region is not as crazy as those in Holland.

My advise is to go back to the old fashion way of one to one :) hehe Yes I know it is more time consuming and need couragement to always search for guys...hehe..well, better to be safe than sorry ...right?
16. 2007-06-07 10:15
When you guys launching V5? it been months since the launch parties.
17. 2007-06-07 11:05
These are sad unfortunate news. Such acts are for the jaded. If can't handle the truth and reality, why not just don't get into those sex orgies and attract unwanted diseases. Why must there be orgies in the first place?

Oh, please do not forget about the other sex diseases out there....Nasty.
18. 2007-06-07 11:05
we only have ourselves and our kind to cherish... please be kind... let us respect one another...
19. 2007-06-07 14:35
Just great, more ammunication for the ignorants. Live and let live.
20. 2007-06-07 15:08
truly sad news...
Hope the vicitms will stand strong and may the rest of the world give them utmost support.....

21. 2007-06-07 16:15
Sad is that these things happen everywhere. Sad also is those who do not take personal responsibility. The article indicates those victims were 25 to 50 years old. Now, I'm sure no one would consider them minors unable to sense the potential danger of such hookups. Yes, they can blame those evil guys all they want, but in the end, they're the ones suffering. Need another lesson, anyone?
22. 2007-06-07 16:43
Gosh....
those guys are sick!!!!!!
they deserve death rows!!!all of them!!!!!
23. 2007-06-07 23:12
Oh my God, how would they let other people to suffer like them? They should have hearts and its really sad....I hope they realise their mistakes and repent.

The couple are not 48 and 33 - both are 48. They were known to their neighbours as "ordinary, nice people", and neighbours also commented that one of the couple was "the woman". His other half is a nurse! Anyway, these people are just serious criminals and this case has little to do with homosexuality. It could just as well have happened in the straight sex scene. Unfortunately, there are criminals and idiots everywhere: some kill their class mates at school, others inject blood in sex partners. Hopefully many people will become a little more careful in choosing their sex partners after reading this story.

Now, tsubiboy, we do NOT have death penalty ANYWHERE in Europe, including Turkey and Russia that strecch more in Asia than in Europe.

Sure, these despicable cretaures should be punished severely, but Europe thinks death penalty is barbaric.
27. 2007-06-08 12:36
scary...
28. 2007-06-08 15:28
Having AIDS is not a shame. The act to spread it is shameful
29. 2007-06-08 15:39
16 years is too short to punish those kind of abhorrent animal!
30. 2007-06-08 20:41
fridae.com editors: please follow this case and report on the court's decisions when they are handed down...we all deserve CLOSURE.
31. 2007-06-09 13:43
it's a very selfish act of those barbarians who just contaminate innocent people! Sometime I wonder if these barbarians could really disgrace the gay community around the world considering such acts are of inhumane in nature and people are prejudice enough against gays! 16 years in prison is not enough when these innocent people's lives will change drastically when they are infected with such enormous disease that will ruin. That takes into account the victim's immunte system's strength to prolong their lives. The prosecutors should infact have virtually forsee that such acts could result in death or cuasing serious illness which can be fatal.

A more appropriate sentence would be between 60 years imprisonment to lifetime imprisonment!

However, why would the victims consent to orgy and search for such problems as they is a possibility of forseeable certainty that such risks would take place? Orgy is so far proven to be non-beneficial to individuals and they don't even know these strangers whom they're medling with! Shame on them.

In most western countries, spreading the HI virus knowingly and intentionally, is NOT attempted murder but premeditated severe assault. And the suspects will not get 16 years in prison, but much less--you can count on this.

Moreover, we do not have any death penalty in Western Europe. The death penalty is against the UN Charta of Human Rights, and those countries that still have the death penalty in their legal codes, should be punished and forced to get rid of the death penalty.

Another thing: Let's face it, just have a look at some gay places in Amsterdam or elsewhere in other countries, not just in Western Europe but throughout the world: having unsafe sex is very common, most people give a damn about wearing a condom, and all the "Wear a condom" campaigns have failed. Why? Because people got annoyed by them, and bored. Aids is not a lethal disease any more but a chronic one. There is no cure and living with HIV/Aids will change one's life, for sure. But you won't necessarily die from HIV/Aids any more.

A psychologist should have a look at this case in Groningen: Those guys who did infect others were seropositive themselves. Psychologically speaking, I think they hate gay guys who made them positive and so, they want to destroy other gay guys' lives. This is not an excuse for what they did but maybe an explanation that helps to understand their actions.

what a shocking news.
the men all should be sentenced to at least life imprisonment.

38. 2007-06-12 20:57
I dobbed in a guy to the health authorities who knowingly passed HIV to a friend of mine and on his birthday..great present HUH!...I also have a friend that was forcibly sodomised here in Sydney in a sex venue and thats when he seroconverted, I do not attend sex parties or other sex places cos there are so many 'skanky queers' around here in Sydney, decent gay men ought to think seriously about what they lend their support to..in the words of the poetess/singer Jewel " no longer lend your stregnth to that you wish to be free from" (song: Uncommon Life)
