Singapore AIDS Conference: Getting to zero, Nov 17

Registration for the 8th Singapore AIDS Conference Delegates is now open. Sign the declaration to commit to expand prevention efforts, ensure access to antiretroviral treatment, and provide accessible, non-discriminatory and comprehensive care to end HIV/AIDS in Singapore now.

The following is a press release issued by Action for AIDS, the organiser of the conference:

The 8th Singapore AIDS Conference (SAC) taking place on November 17, 2012, at the Mandarin Orchard Hotel will see AIDS advocates, HIV medical experts, public health officials, persons living with HIV/AIDS, communities affected by HIV infection and other stakeholders gather to discuss initiatives and research that can help Singapore achieve the conference’s goals of eradicating new infections, stigma and deaths related to AIDS.

With the theme “Getting to Zero: Zero new infections, Zero stigma, Zero deaths” the conference programme will call for SAC delegates to add their names to Getting to Zero: A Declaration to End HIV/AIDS in Singapore . Members of the public are also invited to sign on to the declaration via the conference website http://www.sac2012.sg.

Conference sessions have been organised according to the three ZERO targets. With ZERO Discrimination as a cross-cutting theme for all sessions, there will be three sessions reflecting ZERO New HIV Infections and 3 sessions on ZERO AIDS related Deaths.

Dr Amy Khor, Minister of State for Health and Manpower will be the Guest of Honor for the conference. To reach out to a younger audience there will be a Youth Village that will feature activities and presentations designed to involve young persons in the discussions around HIV/AIDS. The conference organizers firmly believe that sexuality education, knowledge about HIV/AIDS, inculcating correct attitudes that will prevent and overcome stigma and discrimination correctly starts with the young. It is hoped that young people attending the conference will form a well-informed core group of individuals who will continue to spread accurate information, attitudes and influence on others.

“The theme of the 8th Singapore AIDS Conference - Getting to ZERO: Zero new infections, Zero stigma , Zero deaths, was chosen to inspire stakeholders to review and to coordinate their efforts that will lead to significant reduction on HIV transmission, and that will lessen the impact of HIV on the lives of those already infected” shared Professor Roy Chan, Action for AIDS President.

The Singapore AIDS Conference is jointly organised by Action for AIDS (AfA) and the Communicable Disease Centre/Tan Tock Seng Hospital with the support of donors Merck Sharp & Dohme, Gilead Asia L/F, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Abbott and Janssen.

While I applaud the advocates and clinicians for their good intentions in working to reduce transmission and eliminate stigma, it is quite disappointing that the source of discrimination and stigma is completely attributed to lay people. Singapore continues to have in place an archaic deportation policy for HIV-infected foreigners. Treatment remains largely unaffordable compared to many countries that have provided universal access to ARVs. PLHIVs are completely uninsurable. All of these roadblocks to the three 'zeros' are not addressed.
