Beijing LGBT filmmaker fights Chinese sensors

Filmmaker Fan Pop is suing the Chinese government over censorship of his documentary, Mama Rainbow

On Monday, Fan officially filed a lawsuit against the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) after his film ‘Mama Rainbow’ was pulled from Chinese web sites.

The Beijing-based filmmaker’s poignant film documents six Chinese mothers coming to terms with their LGBT children.

Fan hopes the suit will help call attention to ongoing efforts to keep gay people and their stories out of film and television and, more broadly, to the state's effort to silence calls for human rights.

“This is about justice," he said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. "I want to find out why they pulled my film."

"The purpose of fighting this case is, on one hand, to raise public awareness about gay groups — that they should enjoy equal rights and they deserve equal treatment," said Fan's lawyer, Wang Zhenyu.  "On the other hand, to demand SAPPRFT stop its improper control on gay subjects."

The censorship comes just weeks after Chinese authorities approved the release of ‘Seek McCartney’ a Sino-French production about a homosexual relationship.

I am so proud of all the great Chinese mothers showing in the video. Hopefully, we would have some great fathers as well!! By the way, 梅姐, you are an amazing mom, I love you!!

I wish Beijing LGBT filmmaker Fan Pop the very best in his fight. Censorship , specially in this case , is indeed most inhumane ; specially in this case , because two parties are being discriminated against ; this is discrimination against both gays and against their parents, and such behaviour should indeed be frowned upon and stopped.

I lived in Bj for a few years , and sure can recall the living hell that those gay offsprings I knew , went through re. their parents.

Living a lie sure is not a walk in the gardens of Beijing , however magnificent they are.

It could have been banned due to being badly made.

Difficult to watch with the bad camera work

Editor - it's Fan Popo. Not Fan Pop.

Keep up the fight and the good work, Fan Popo. Your film is moving and encouraging. @GTiLad: This film is a low-budget documentary. Save your unappreciated remarks for a time where they may be appropriate.

The camera operator must have been on a very low wage to actively move the camera around around so much as a protest.

Consider my comment as support for him/her.
