Philippines Leader Duterte Opposes Gay Marriage

In speech denouncing same-sex unions, Duterte goes back on a 2016 campaign pledge.

President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte spoke out against transgenders and same-sex marriage in a speech in Myanmar on Sunday

“There is the civil code, which states you can only marry a woman for me, and for a woman to marry a man. That’s the law in the Philippines,” he said gathered members of the Filipino community in Myanmar.

He said that although he had gay brother-in-laws and cousins he stressed “Wherever God has placed you, stay there” and said that no one had the power to “erase the great divide between a woman and a man.”

Mr. Duterte presented the country as Asia’s bastion of Roman Catholicism, a religion that steadfastly opposes same-sex marriage.

In reference to a copy of TIME magazine featuring transgender issues he said:

“There's no gender, because you can be or she... that's their culture. That's only for them. That can't be applied to us, we're Catholics. And there is the Civil Code, which is you can only marry a woman for me, and for woman to marry a man. That's the law in the Philippines”

These latest statements are at odds with comments made during his 2016 campaign in which he said “the gays were created by God.”

There is not civil code that Leader name should be Duterte
gay marriage is not against civil code because some gay are act as women and other gays act as men.

Even If you see women like Angela Merkel or Hillary Clinton , they are not women but they look like women.

The genital, vagina is appear as Women but their soul are not women.

Look in Boxing arena, athletic, and etc.
Pressure are given for those equal.
If you see women and men in the same arena, then it is abnormal, right?

Why He, Duterte give pressure and punch to Gays with no shy?
If he suppose to give pressure and punch , then manny pacquiao should be his target..that is equal

Seems to me that there is a competition going on here, between Duterte and Trump: who can end up being the worst, most stupid president. They are still early in their administrations, so the outcome is not clear yet.
If Duterte changes his mind and supports gay marriage, he may well hand Trump an easy victory.

I agree with you on this one David. The Philippines cannot move forward on gay rights and marriage, as that country has a long ways to go. They need to get past the hate and ridicule of gays, lesbians and transgenders.

That's not a surprise that this came out of a fascist and a narcissist like him.

"These latest statements are at odds with comments made during his 2016 campaign in which he said “the gays were created by God.”

Nah, that's an illogical statement.

I have heard a lot of things he is against, and his extra-judicial drug war is awful. The man like Trump seems to be anti a lot of things but pro very little.

Well Duterte stated the obvious, “That can't be applied to us, we're Catholics."

Religious rhetoric is the killer to free thinking. Religion needs to be contained and taxed! Then you will see a radical change in religious groups behavior.

Filipinos need to find acceptance with gays in their culture. They treat their gays like circus clowns or sideshow attraxctions. Do you know that you will even get mocked by the Filipino people if you have HIV? That's quite sad and such a shame indeed. That country has a long way to go.

Duarte is annoying, and evidently has little respect for human life. He's so hard to love. Think of the suffering underneath that sad man's strong man nonsense. Think of the suffering his own suffering perpetuates. Bummer. Hugs to all the brave Pinoy LGBT people who stand up without fear against violence and anger. But keep your eyes open: guys like this are dangerous. Don't blame all religion. There are kind and queer religious folk, but not enough of them. Blame delusion, and anger, and stupid. Duarte has a bad, bad case of stupid.

filipinos are never very accepting of gays, they treat their gay people like circus side show attractions, like clowns .. very demeaning and degrading and not a good way of treating them like proper human beings .. they'll never learn will they? then they elect a president that's not accepting of gays either, which doesn't help their stupid plight

filipinos are so dumb that they will never understand the TRUE meaning of homosexuality .. just a bunch of idiots!
