My Story by Wong Shih Yaw

Singapore | 2010-02-18 - 2010-02-28
Singaporean artist Wong Shih Yaw’s seventh solo exhibition tells his tumultuous life story – but in painting, using his strong visual narrative skills.

The opening hours are from Monday-Saturday: 12noon - 8pm and Sunday: 12noon – 5.30pm.

About the exhibition:

Singaporean painter Wong Shih Yaw’s latest series returns to his penchant for narrative painting, this time using as source material episodes taken from his own rather eventful life. My Story is an autobiography on canvas, with each painting broadly focused on a period of the artist’s life and rendered largely in black and white to evoke the nostalgia and social realism of a narrative woodcut. Each painting in My Story is a montage of scenes relating to a particular time or, in the later paintings, theme. Enlivened with minimal colour, the paintings are animated by the dramatic incidents portrayed. They address situations of family, acquaintance, school and work, and themes of victimization, despair, desire and health; as Singapore’s pre-eminent Christian painter, issues of divine protection, sin and forgiveness through an omnipresent Christ also permeate the series as they do Shih Yaw’s life.

About the artist:

Wong Shih Yaw has swung from emotive expressionism in his early days at the Artists Village and first solo exhibition, Worldly People (1996), to the allegorical Christian realism begun in his second solo, Shalom (1999), and continued in the group show, Feed the Birds (2000), and third solo, In Thee (2004). Life’s Interpretations (2005) was his fourth solo show, documenting a decade of drawings, but also introducing a series of interesting line drawings on canvas, which influenced the illustrative nature of his acrylic paintings in Out of the Grey (2006), his fifth solo show. Shih Yaw continued in the same illustrative vein for his sixth solo The Stage (2009), and again in My Story, his seventh solo exhibition, which is also influenced by woodcut printing. The artist is heavily collected by the Singapore Art Museum and several prominent collectors.
