Eight Men Face Jail Over ‘Gay Party’ in Indonesia

Although homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, the LGBT community has been facing increasing hostility in the country.

A group of men arrested in Indonesia’s second largest city Surabaya for holding a 'gay party' could face up to 15 years in prison.

Police took 14 men into custody on Sunday night after raiding two hotel rooms. Authorities have named eight men and say two could face lengthy sentences for organising the event.

Shinto Silitonga, Surabaya police's head of detectives, told reporters some of the men were watching gay porn and performing 'deviant sexual acts.” They have been charged under the country’s anti-pornography laws. Six others were released.

“This is the first time we enforce the law and arrest gay people in the city,” Silitonga told Agence France Presse.

Preliminary charges have been filed under Indonesia's tough anti-pornography laws. Six of the arrested men were released.

Don't the accused have to consent to be sentenced under sharia law?
