riding for life 2003 announced

For the first time, Action for AIDS (AfA) and the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) will jointly organise Riding for Life 2003 from Jun. 1-8.

"Riding for Life 2003: In the Name of Love" (RfL) will raise money for AIDS prevention and treatment programmes through a 900 km ride through Malaysia and home to Singapore.

Riding for Life 2003 will bring together, for the first time, Action for AIDS (AfA) and the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) in a common effort to raise funds against HIV/AIDS. Funds raised by each organization in this unique joint effort will be used to fund their respective programmes in Singapore and Malaysia.

Flagging off in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, Jun. 1, riders will cycle some 900km crisscrossing the Malaysian peninsula to finish in Singapore on Sunday, Jun. 8.

The 8-day ride will take riders through Malaysia including Kuantan, Seremban, Melaka, Batu Pahat and Johor Bahru and MAF will conduct AIDS awareness events for the general public at each stop.

The previous two rides raised over S$100,000 for the AfA Medications Fund.

As before, this year's riders show their commitment in 3 ways:
1. raise S$2000 in pledges
2. train for the long-distance ride
3. commit themselves to fight AIDS and its stigma.

The first training ride will be held on World AIDS Day, Sunday 1 December 2002.

Besides riders, RfL needs volunteers to:
1. support crew on the ride - masseurs/masseuses, drivers, first aiders
2. help with the welcome rally and fund raising - road marshalls, goody bags, entertainment and event support, etc, etc, etc
