Period Parrrty, a play about a trans Tamil teenager reshaping a family celebration, has won Best Stage Production at the Asian Media Awards. The ceremony took place in Manchester on Friday, 30 October.
Written by Gayathiri Kamalakanthan and directed by Gitika Buttoo, the production brought Kali Theatre and Soho Theatre together. The awards organiser announced the result on 31 October.
At the centre of the story is Krish, who is preparing for a Tamil period party intended to mark womanhood. Krish isn’t a girl. In Soho Theatre’s synopsis, their best friend Brenavee and a growing chosen family help them turn the occasion into a celebration on their own terms.
The play’s Soho run was from 23 October to 22 November 2025. Kamalakanthan’s own account of the work describes it as a trans Tamil party, with queer romance, survival and self-determination running through the story.
In the organiser’s account, the team drew attention to the small company behind it. “Kali Theatre is absolutely tiny,” they said, explaining that Kamalakanthan had come through its Discovery Programme for emerging playwrights. They credited that development route with helping new theatre writing reach the stage, and thanked the Soho team, cast and crew.
