Stonewall survey finds support among LGBTQ+ adults open with family

The UK report finds support among respondents open with family, alongside lower levels of openness overall.

UK LGBTQ+ adults who are open with their families report high levels of acceptance, according to a Stonewall report published on 30 October. The findings also show that many respondents remain less open with family about their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Among respondents in the report’s lesbian, gay, bi and other sexual-orientation group (LGB+) who were open with family, 93% felt fully or somewhat accepted. Among trans+ respondents who were open with family about gender identity, the figure was 86%. This group includes transgender and non-binary people.

The groups answering those questions matter. In the wider sample, 67% of LGB+ respondents were fully or somewhat open with family about sexual orientation. For trans+ respondents and gender identity, that proportion was 52%. The acceptance results therefore describe respondents open with family, rather than how every family would react to greater openness.

The report did not ask why respondents were not open.

Stonewall commissioned YouGov to survey 3,473 LGBTQ+ adults online between 25 March and 27 April 2026. Results were weighted using Census demographics. The report’s methodology says differences from its 2017 research mean the datasets are not directly comparable; comparisons in the report are illustrative.
