Bangkok queer book fair makes room for readers, writers and love letters

Saturday’s event at TK Park pairs book stalls with poetry, conversation and a session on writing queer love letters.

Thai Queer Book Fair will bring writers, readers and independent publishers together in Bangkok on Saturday, 24 October. The event runs from noon to 6pm at TK Park, on the eighth floor of centralwOrld.

The programme includes a writers’ conversation from 2pm, followed by poetry readings and performances at 3pm. A drag reading performance is scheduled for 5pm. These are Bangkok times.

There’s room to make something, too. Artist Oat Montien is leading a session on writing queer love letters from 1.30pm to 3pm. The book-booth section brings together publishers, bookshops and independent makers.

Organiser Girlies Pop Reads, a queer literary and cultural collective, says it wants queer literature to have a lasting place in Thailand’s reading culture. Its aim is also social: to give queer people a place to find one another, while welcoming readers of all genders.

For someone who usually encounters these books alone, that offers a different way into a story: through a conversation with the people making it.

Check the fair’s current programme before heading out. Its About page says admission and accessibility details will be announced there.
