Colorado voters approve sports restrictions affecting transgender students

Proposition 134 covers school and college teams; mixed teams remain open to all.

Colorado voters have approved Proposition 134, a measure restricting transgender students’ participation in school and college sports. The Associated Press reported the result on 6 November.

The state’s official voter guide says the measure covers school sports from elementary education through college, including public, private and religious schools. Teams must be designated male, female or mixed, with eligibility for the sex-specific teams based on the measure’s definition of biological sex.

Mixed teams remain open to everyone. Students classified as female can join a male team if no equivalent female team is offered. Sports leagues operating separately from schools are outside the measure’s scope.

Schools and school districts must decide how to verify eligibility; the measure does not prescribe a particular method. The voter guide also flags uncertainty over how it will interact with Colorado’s existing anti-discrimination law.
