For the discerning gay, lesbian and bisexual movie-goer, forget
the Caped-Crusader-in-Black-Mascara. There's only one movie you
should go to this week, and that's the gripping psychological drama
In My Father's Den.

This New Zealand film centres on a young man (studly Matthew McFayden)
who, after a successful career in photojournalism, returns to his
rural hometown to confront his past. Shunned by the town-folks for
reasons not yet revealed to us, he strikes up a friendship with
a 16-year-old girl (Emily Barclay) who looks up to him because of
his worldly experiences. But tragedy ensues, and the film that begins
as a poignant drama gradually transforms itself into an extraordinary
mystery-thriller.

With superb direction and performances, this debut feature by writer-director
Brad McGann is nothing short of dazzling. Brad seems to know exactly
what he wants out of his cast and crew, and gets them to deliver
the goods again and again. The result is powerful and multi-layered
story, whose haunting beauty is surpassed only by the natural landscape
of New Zealand in which the film is set.

In My Father's Den is our pick of the week.
