After years of tickling Singaporean funnybones on TV, Jack Neo
has become very adept at blending slapstick and sentimentality in
his social comedies. At his best, he's managed to tap into some
very Singaporean obsessions and anxieties (Money No?Enough
and I Not Stupid). At his worst, his social critiques are
half-baked and unsatisfying (I Do, I Do and The Best
Bet).
It remains to be seen whether his new film about ex-convicts trying
to adjust to life outside of prison is a genuinely heartfelt film
or another mediocre piece of work.
The movie stars Mark Lee, Apple Hong and Golden Horse winner Megan
Tay. More on this film next week.
