Jasmine Women tells three poignant tales of Chinese women
over the span of 50 years. The first story, set in the 1930s, centers
on a beautiful young woman (Zhang Ziyi) who dreams of becoming a
glamorous actress. The second story shows that same woman 20 years
later (now played by Joan Chen) and her thorny relationship with
her daughter (played by Ziyi). The final story is set in the 1980s
and revolves around the same woman (played by an older-looking Joan)
and her adopted granddaughter (also played by Ziyi).

Exploring the bittersweet relationships between women of different
generations, Jasmine Women is the perfect movie for Mother's
Day celebrations. The incandescent Zhang Ziyi was awarded Best Actress
at the 2004 Golden Rooster Awards, while director Hou Yong received
the Special Jury Award at the 2004 Shanghai International Film Festival,
among other nominations the film received.

Director Hou Yong was once the cinematographer for famous 5th Generation
directors like Zhang Yimou and Tian Zhuangzhuang. His gorgeous cinematography
in landmark Chinese films like The Blue Kite, The Road
Home
and Not One Less made him one the most sought-after
cinematographers in the Chinese film industry. Not surprisingly,
Jasmine Women is blessed with evocative images and strong
acting, helping it overcome the occasional bouts of melodrama.
