Sarah Mclachlan: Bloom Remixed

Fridae's music mistress, Ms Mariah Scary, reviews Sarah McLachlan's latest release Bloom Remixed and fumbles towards ecstasy.

Artist: Sarah Mclachlan

Released: 2005

Anyone who has seen Ms Sarah McLachlan perform "live" will know that she will never be able to body-pop like teen R&B sensation Ciara even if you put a shotgun to her head. At most, she could probably sway side to side more energetically like an agitated Stevie Wonder while clutching her guitar or when tickling her ivories.

However, since "Silence 2004" topped the Billboard Hot Dance Music Club Play chart and Remixed topped the Billboard Top Electronic Chart, the Lilith Fair founder's classic compositions have proven themselves to be capable of being resuscitated as dance chart toppers.

In fact, it is Ms Scary's belief that one just needs to blindly pick any song from the three-time Grammy Award winner's repertoire, add hypnotic dance beats, enhance her vocals with echoey effects, set her lyrics in a permanent loop and one is almost guaranteed to have a massive hit.

Featuring mostly songs from her latest album Afterglow, Bloom is Ms McLachlan's second "remixed" album which features collaborations with topnotch remix masters and is filled with dance tracks that will have gay and lesbian clubbers shimmying to the dancefloor whenever they are played.

In addition to the usual blissed-out house hits such as "World On Fire" (Junkie XL Club Mix) and "Fallen" (Gabriel & Dresden Anti-Gravity Mix), there are also interesting remixes such as the Tori Amos sounding "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" (Junior Boys Mix) and the 80s electro-disco styled "Vox" (Tom Middleton Mix) where she sounds exactly like falsetto queen Andy Bell's long-lost sister (albeit with better vocals).

Bloom also includes beautiful chill-out tracks such as "Dirty Little Secret" which has been re-crafted by Thievery Corporation into a Caf Del Ma must-have and "Answer" which has been refashioned by tablatronic master Talvin Singh of Anokha fame into something that one expects to hear while sitting in Deepak Chopra's consultation room.

The perfect companion for the plane ride to Phuket for the upcoming Nation parties.

Scary's Selected Spins: "World On Fire," "Vox," "Dirty Little Secret," "Stupid," "Answer," "Fallen," and "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy."
