1 February 2012 #412

Now that the Oscar nominations finally out, it's time for very serious movie season, the time of the year where we get our (perhaps only) dose of responsible, tasteful, well-made cinema. This week at the Fridae Movie Club though, we say it's time for one last silly fling first!

Our pick of the week is Underworld: Awakening, starring the gorgeous Kate Beckinsdale, who reprises the role of sleek leather-clad supervampire Selena in the ongoing war between lycans, vampires... and humans. Underworld: Awakening is an instalment that practically reboots the entire Underworld franchise, giving it a much needed shot in the arm.

More popcorn fun arrives this week with Quick, a Korean action comedy that revolves around a mail bomb terrorist, his reluctant and captive motorcycle courier accomplice, lots of car chases, motorcycle stunts, and loud explosions. It’s big, loud, and full of expensive, complicated stunts!

Our Oscar nominee for the week is The Descendants, a road-trip dramedy starring George Clooney as a well to do Hawaiian lawyer who finds his life turned upside down when his wife meets an accident and he discovers she was cheating on him before that.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

Underworld: Awakening

Coming off from the extremely weak prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Underworld: Awakening is surprisingly good. It takes the franchise into uncharted waters by changing the fictional universe drastically. As an action film, this is the goriest entry in the series with extreme fight sequences that show off Ms Beckinsale's talent for looking really cool while kicking CGI monster ass. Gory and well-written, it rejuvenates an ailing Underworld franchise.
