It’s a great week for comedy buffs with this week's new cinema releases.

A Few Best Men, our pick of the week comes courtesy of the director of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This time round, a couple of naughty English lads try not to destroy their best friend's wedding despite being drunk, high, and prone to get into trouble!

Sacha Baron Cohen returns with a new comedy, The Dictator. As supreme commander General Aladeen, he takes on the United Nations, Hillary Clinton, and the owner of a feminist vegan co-op in Greenwich Village to save his beloved nation from the ravages of democracy!

If you'd rather not smile and guffaw in the cinema though, you could try My Way, a stirring tale of war-time courage and honour that plays like a Call of Duty game raised to the level of art. Trust Korea to show Michael Bay a thing or two about how it's done!

If you're into demented war comedies instead, here's a rare treat. Guns N' Roses is pretty much 'Allo 'Allo set in occupied China during the Sino-Japanese war. Will its everyman conman-rogue character come up tops while juggling the Resistance against the Occupation forces?

After the surprise hit of horror comedy Piranha 3D, its sequel, Piranha 3DD promises even bigger boobs and bites. Will it be safe to go into the water again?

Our prerequisite romantic drama this week is First Time. Beautifully shot and highly ambitious, it almost takes the mickey out of the entire romance genre.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

A Few Best Men

Best known for putting Hugo Weaving and Terence Stamp in drag and making them dance to 70s disco tracks in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Australian LGBT director Stephan Elliot hasn't had a good follow-up in years. There aren't any trannies on buses in the outback desert this time round, but this raucous Aussie wedding comedy won't give you a hangover. One of the great things about doing comedy is once you get the premise right, the jokes write themselves. They may not be original but they're so appropriately inappropriate, the punchlines will set you laughing anyway — and that's the beauty of A Few Best Men.
