27 June 2012 #433

It's the final week of June and due to strange international scheduling of Hollywood releases, there's only one blockbuster releasing this week in East Asia, which otherwise gets to watch the biggest and loudest films ahead of American audiences.

Our pick of the week naturally falls to The Amazing Spider-Man, a complete reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise.

This time round, Andrew Garfield fills in the web slinger's spandex unitard, portraying the Marvel hero as an ordinary Joe whose convictions and choices — and not superpowers — make him who he is. We feel that this one is the definitive version of Spider-Man, easily blowing the Sam Raimi ode to nerds with secret power fantasies out of the water.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

The Amazing Spider-Man

Stretching the theme that choices and not abilities define heroism to its logical conclusion, The Amazing Spider-Man is not just a character piece of Peter Parker's development into Spider-Man but also a celebration of everyday heroism.

The film wisely chooses not to have Spider-Man an object to be feared, supplicated, or worshipped by the citizens of New York but rather as a character whose acts of kindness citizens are grateful towards and who inadvertently inspires the common man to the better angels of his nature. This film truly captures the magic of Marvel's flagship character.
