11 July 2012 #435

It's a good week for LGBT-friendly movies and movies that fall in line with the general LGBT agenda!

Our pick of the week is Bernie, where Jack Black plays a genuinely nice and popular small-town mortician who may be gay... and may have murdered the town's resident mean, rich widow, much to the gratitude of the townsfolk! Based on a true story, this film mashes dark comedy and documentary to create an unforgettable tale.

Manny the woolly mammoth and his friends are back again in Ice Age 4: Continental Drift. You know what this means: it's time to expose your favourite nephews and nieces to a treatise on the theory of evolution, plate tectonics, and other nasty scientific stuff in the guise of a crowd-pleasing animated comedy!

Fans of Hong Kong noir films will rejoice in Motorway, a crime film that sets traffic cops against speed-racers moonlighting as getaway drivers for the criminal underworld. High octane, gritty, and packed with set pieces, this film gives the Fast and Furious franchise a run for its money.

What happens when a group of silly American tourists enter the Chernobyl exclusion zone to have a day tour of an abandoned Soviet-era Ukrainian town? Since Chernobyl Diaries is a horror film, it's safe to expect a high body count and various scares involving cannibalistic, radioactive survivors of the 1986 nuclear disaster!

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

Bernie

One of the bright lights of the indie scene delivers a morbidly funny yet sweet piece of Americana propelled by three terrific performances. Richard Linklater can always be counted on for strong character-driven storytelling and sparking dialogue, and this instance is no exception. A semi-documentary spliced with a narrative film about the now-convicted murderer Bernie Tiede, Bernie is a piece of morbidly funny Americana with its simultaneous affection and criticism of American eccentricities that would not be out of place in Mark Twain.
