1 August 2012 #438

If you're in serious need for laughs, I'm glad to inform you that it's comedy week at the Fridae Movie Club.

Our pick of the week is Moonrise Kingdom, the latest from American auteur Wes Anderson. The nostalgic and almost painterly film pits a quirky pair of pre-adolescent runaway lovers against a boy scout troop and a bevvy of squabbling child-like adults, headed by Tilda Swinton threatening to send the miscreants off to be lobotomised and institutionalised in a 'juvenile hall'.

In Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley star as a very accidental odd couple on a road trip across the East Coast in the final days before a meteorite smashes into the Earth and ends all life as we know it. How will humanity cope with its mortality? The film is a series of vignettes that are both depressingly funny and bittersweet.

Im Sang-soo returns with The Taste of Money, another caustic swipe at the rich and powerful in South Korea. Like his previous film The Housemaid, the focus of attention is once again a rich, corrupt, and hypocritical family on top of their game and the verge of a meltdown. More a class conscious satire and comedy of manners than a melodrama, the film is relentlessly mean to all its characters.

If the demented minds at Gainax thought up Heroes first and turned into a live action feature film, SPEC: Heaven throws the best and most bizarre tropes of anime together and lets them run loose. The result is anarchic, highly nonsensical, and entertaining spectacle that will appeal to savvy anime fans.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

Moonrise Kingdom

Moonrise Kingdom is a beautiful evocation of that twilight between the moment when girls stop being icky to you and start being Goddesses at whose knees you end up begging. It's a movie about a pair of New England pre-adolescents that plays itself like life imitating a genre film as viewed through the imagination of a twelve-year old, complete with rules that don't quite obey the laws of conventional physics.
