8 August 2012 #439

To our readers in Singapore, a happy 47th National Day and the first week of Singapore's Pride Month — IndigNation!

Our pick of the week is The Bourne Legacy. This semi-reboot of the Bourne Franchise features action man du jour Jeremy Renner filling in Matt Damon's boots while eye candy Rachel Weisz tags along.

Continuing the trend in big budget remakes is Total Recall, this time round starring Colin Farrell as the factory worker who finds himself unmasked as a memory-wiped super spy when he goes to purchase a memory of a perfect dream. And no, this time round it's not a dream of a vacation to Mars with an espionage element!

When life throws you a lemon, when people prove to be more than disappointingly human, frail, and depressing, you make a great comedy out of it. And that's what Todd Solondz does in his relentlessly depressing and relentlessly funny Life During Wartime.

With Brave, Disney atones fully for decades of enforcing gender stereotypes in its animated films. Our heroine is a red-haired princess who beats the boys at sports, isn't interested in becoming a gentle, well-mannered queen, or in fact getting married to a suitable boy... It's a great film to bring your nephews and nieces to watch, obviously.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

The Bourne Legacy

The new plot revolves around this new agent by the name of Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), who we see early on engaging in some wilderness survival programme in Alaska and battling the elements in a training montage. Most of the film takes place as one long chase across various action setpieces of varying quality, from tense shootouts to car chases to a final motorbike chase all the way across Manila while being pursued by that ubiquitous Hollywood villain, the inscrutable silent Asian henchman. Well-shot and edited and action fans will find plenty to love, The Bourne Legacy is a pretty predictable chase thriller, but Renner and Weisz give it gravitas.
