If you were here in Singapore last weekend, you might have listened to Jay Chou sing at the F1 race circuit concert or watched Rain's farewell concert "Rain: The Best" in cinemas here.

Our pick for this week though is GF*BF, a LGBT film which begins in the waning years of Chiang's martial law era, where a teenage love triangle discover political and social freedom at the same time as their own sexual discovery.

The Assassins is a Zhang Yimou-style re-telling of the political intrigue of China's Three Kingdoms period. The revisionist tale throws a pair of unhappy star-crossed lovers and assassins against the backdrop of some serious political kabuki between the warlord Cao Cao (played by a very charismatic Chow Yun Fatt) and his puppet emperor.

We also recommend action thriller Premium Rush for those in need of an adrenalin rush. The action thriller stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a speed bicycle courier in spandex shorts zipping around downtown NYC delivering a package that the Chinese mob and crooked NYPD cops both want.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

GF*BF

Girlfriend Boyfriend seems to be a placebo for the nostalgia for that precise moment first of all, and a gay-straight love triangle second. The very loose love triangle is that of Liam (Joseph Chang), Mabel (Gwei Lun-Mei) and Aaron (Rhydian Vaughan) and follows them from their days as students in the late 80s, their professional lives in the 90s and their eventual destinies in the 00s. Liam is gay despite his unsuccessful attempts at trying otherwise, Mabel and Aaron are straight. Liam likes Aaron, Aaron likes Mabel, and Mabel likes Liam. The city of Rome's commissioning of a Woody Allen film set in Rome is a testimony to his long career.
