24 October 2012 #450

Halloween lurches closer each time the sun sets below the horizon. You can rest assured that the Fridae Movie Club will sink its fangs into B-grade, trashy horror flicks in the coming weeks even as we feature other more regular movie fare.

Our pick for the week is the French arthouse film It Begins With the End. Just like 500 Days of Summer, this film covers a romantic relationship from beginning to end and tells it in seemingly random, non-linear order. Since it's French, of course the story is told with lots of passion and style.

Cop buddy drama gets the steadycam treatment with End of Watch, where Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena are car patrol cops assigned to one of the toughest, most violent, criminal-ridden neighbourhoods of Los Angeles. Those who with a fetish for uniformed services and online fragging might be compelled to check it out.

Despite its preposterous premise (sharks and shoppers trapped in a supermarket after a tsunami!) and the unintentional humour arising from a script with too many writing teams, Bait 3D is a rare non-comic horror film. The draw of the film? Sharks eating people!

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

It Begins With the End

As far as romantic comedies goes, 500 Days of Summer and its loopy non-linear storytelling threw out the Hollywood rulebook in 2009 and recast the genre as an unsentimental coming-of-age story of a young sentimental couple who grow up by growing out of each other. Barely a year later, the concept is reaffirmed in It Begins With the End, which one can almost imagine as the original indie film, made with a more intense, French arthouse sensibility.
