31 October 2012 #451

Welcome to the Halloween omnibus issue of the Fridae Movie Club newsletter, where we give you a rundown on all the horror films releasing this weekend.

Our pick of the week though is the 23rd instalment in the Bond film franchise, Skyfall. Daniel Craig as the debonair superspy in HM's secret service. Sam Mendes directs the film as a psychosexual drama, pitting Craig and Javier Bardem's bisexual Bond villain as twisted twins in an Oedipal struggle for M.

Don't mind Clint Eastwood's bizarre monologue at the Republican National Convention. He still manages to deliver a knock-out performance as a cranky, washed-up, ageing talent scout on the wrong side of the Moneyball revolution in Trouble with the Curve.

In Butter, Jennifer Garner finally lets loose her comedic talent as a ruthless and over-ambitious Lady MacBeth character... who only wants to win a trophy in a butter-carving art contest.

House at the End of the Street may sound like a horror movie title but it's more of a twisted psychological thriller in the style of Alfred Hitchcock and Brian de Palma. It's not so much about a serial killer but the question of why a serial killer has been kept locked in the basement by her loving family...

It may be about ghostly hauntings captured on video cam, but with Apartment 143, the Spanish prove once again that they know how to make a real horror movie on a real low budget.

If you’ve been spooked three times before by Oren Peli's shenanigans, Paranormal Activity 4 delivers the same scares one more time, with one small twist...

K-horror may be on a waning trend but that shouldn't stop you from catching Horror Stories, a horror anthology that has the most gore and camp

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

Skyfall

Bond returns to England when MI6 headquarters are bombed by a powerful and highly intelligent cyberterrorist, who turns out to be Silva, real name Chiago Rodriguez, who is a former MI6 agent whose shenanigans in the field ended him in the hands of the Chinese authorities on the eve of Hong Kong's handover, and who has since sworn revenge on those who abandoned him especially M, who he refers to as 'Momma'. Silva, a flamboyant bisexual who dresses like a disco-era fashion dud, is also a supremely brilliant and cunning mastermind who does have a lot of fun being evil as he is, and formerly one of M's favourite agents in the field. He's like an evil, jealous, slightly incestuous elder brother whose rivalry with Bond is basically a tug of war for Mama's affections.
