7 November 2012 #452

This weekend, the 2012 Korean Film Festival arrives in Singapore, courtesy of the Embassy of South Korea and the Singapore Film Society.

That's in addition to the Perspectives Film Festival, which returns this year with a focus on sexuality, and several films with LGBT issues, including the Turkish film Zenne Dancer, in which three close friends deal with what it means to be gay in Turkey, and Fire, one of the first Indian films to portray a homosexual relationship within an Indian family.

Elsewhere in cinemas, our pick of the week goes to Pitch Perfect, a high school musical comedy that gives television's Glee a run for its money both on the music and bitchiness factors. Anna Kendrick stars as an aspiring deejay whose mashup arrangements may be just the thing to propel a moribund college choir to the top.

All in Good Time shows just what a bad idea living with the in-laws is if you're newlyweds seeking space and 'couple time' of yourselves. Blending bedroom farce, family drama, and ethnic comedy, the film exactly what you expect from putting the creators of Calendar Girls and East is East together.

Till next week,

Vernon Chan

PICK OF THE WEEK

Pitch Perfect

Anna Kendrick plays Beca, a freshman in college and an aspiring deejay whose skills at remixing and musical bricolage may come in handy in rejuvenating the Bellas, all-girls a cappella group on campus that's a bit of a joke thanks to their boring, safe selection of songs and choreography they use year after year. She's so talented that there's a chance for the Bellas to ride all the way to the state intercollegiate finals. That is, if the group pulls together despite being a bunch of misfits and un-PC stereotypes (the fat one, the black lesbian, the inaudible Asian, etc.) held under the thumb of a near-dictatorial senior. You could well imagine this film to be bitchier, funnier, and less politically correct than television's Glee.
