Film Study on Lesbian Representations with Loretta Chen

Singapore | 2011-04-21
And Then Came Lola-- followed by Sapphic Desires on Stage and the Silver Screen : A Roundtable Discussion on the Representations of the Lesbian Body with Dr Loretta Chen

Post-Museum and The Ob/scene presents the 3rd installation to the gender-related series of events with the "time-bending, sexy, lesbian romp" And Then Came Lola. While previous events have centred around Feminism and what it is, this event will mark the shift int⋯⋯o Gay and Lesbian Studies with an independent film made by a group of LBT women, for LBT women.

As many of you are aware, MDA has institutionalised the discrimination against queer bodies in films and other visual mediums. The most recent assault to the LGBTQ community was in MDA's censure of the film The Kids Are All Right--which had limited screenings in Singapore due to its lesbian-affirming content. In other words, all acceptable representations of LGBTQ persons should involve them being mad, or meeting an eventual macabre death. However, what seemed to be lacking in this uproar was any suggestions of, or elaborations on what actually is a "positive representation" of LGBTQ persons.

The film will serve as a case study for the discussion group chaired by Dr Loretta Chen, to be held immediately after the film. Dr Chen will be exploring issues surrounding the (in)ability to represent the lesbian body in film and in the eyes of the law, as well as what--if possible--contributes to a positive representation.

Dr Loretta Chen's PhD was on Contra-indications: Corporeality, Iconicity and Representation in Singapore Lesbian Theatre, which included a section on the paradoxes and ambiguities of MDA's legislation. She is perhaps more well known as a gay icon, vocal advocate and supporter of the LGBTQ community. For more about Dr Loretta Chen can be found on her website: http://www.loretta-chen.com/

*The Ob/scene is a series of gender-related events that seek to bring onto the scene, what was once off the scene.

**This is a private event. RSVP required.
