Cambodia celebrates 3rd pride festival May 9-17 in Phnom Penh

Cambodia's third annual pride festival is underway from today till May 17, scheduled to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).

Cambodia LGBT Pride 2011 is organised by Rainbow Community Kampuchea (RoCK), a voluntary non-profit group that supports Cambodian lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) by recognising and promoting the need for equality and respect regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI).

Due to local regulations, the festival will not feature a street parade or public rally. Planned events include art and photography exhibitions, a film festival featuring Cambodian and foreign films on LGBT themes, various drag shows, karaoke nights, parties and other social events at gay-friendly venues. Other activities include daily "pride aerobics" workouts at Wat Botum Park, a pool tournament, a quiz night, roller skating, a family and community day with a visit to a local pagoda, and a workshop on LGBT issues.

A full, up-to-date schedule of events can be found at the following websites: Mstylekhmer.com (Events section), MStyle Facebook page and Cambodia LGBT Pride Facebook page. For the first time, a bilingual ‘Guide to Pride’ booklet that features a list of LGBT friendly venues and additional information about events during Pride week is being distributed.

Quote: "Due to local regulations, the festival will not feature a street parade or public rally."

Questions: Do these local regulations pertain to ALL street parades, and public rallies? Or only the GAY ones?

Given that parade or rally seem to be prohibited (or not advisable) according to laws and regulations. What else would guarantee the participants that the festival is safe to join in; a bunch of gay might get arrested for it on this Anti Homophobia day!

caesar2003, according to a festival organiser, protests and parades of any kind aren't allowed in Cambodia.

petit_nat17, I'm guessing indoor events are safe since the festival is in its third year. Other than that, there's really no guarantee for anything is there?
