Indonesian Police Cut Trans Women’s Hair, Dress Them in Male Clothing

Police detained the women before forcing them to change their appearance.

In a January police raid on beauty salons in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province, transgender women were forced to dress in male clothing and had their hair cut, Channel News Asia reported.

The women were initially accused of “violating religious laws” and bullying youth.

Police reportedly intervened after locals tried to attack the women, but later detained them and forced them to alter their appearance. They also said they would subject the women to “morals teaching” during their detention.

A gay rights activist described the authorities’ actions as “barbaric.”

The harassment and torture of LGBT's in Indonesia appears to be escalating at a faster and faster pace. I would hope gay rights group will up their game on confronting this outrageous actions of the Indonesian government and their minions. These are indeed dark days for our brothers and sisters in Indonesia's LGBT community.

HappyWilly, this goes so much beyond LGBT rights. Indonesia is in a scary state concerning human rights (see AI's 2016/17 report quoted in my post on "Indonesian legislature moves to ban sex outside marriage"). It has been getting worse and worse as the military of the Suharto era have been creeping back to power, in a de facto alliance with hardline Muslims. And frankly, forcing transgender women to dress in male clothing and have their hair cut is bad, but much worse has been happening recently in this country.

That’s human rights violation and it’s deplorable. I greatly despise and disgust these people and their government who use religion as a pretext to abuse, harass and prosecute someone they don’t like.
