Is homosexuality legal in Nauru?

Yes. Same-sex sexual activity was decriminalised in 2016.

From 1921, Nauru operated under the criminal code of Queensland – a state of Australia. This included the criminalisation of homosexuality. This prohibition was retained following Nauru’s independence in 1968. Decriminalisation was achieved following an act of parliament.

Are there anti-discrimination protections in place for LGBTQ people in Nauru?

No. There are no protections against discrimination on the grounds of sexuality.

Is there Marriage Equality in Nauru?

No. There is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships.
