Ghana’s majority leader says anti-LGBTQ bill needs penalty corrections

James Agalga says Parliament will revisit the penalties before sending the bill to the president.

Ghana’s parliament will revisit its anti-LGBTQ bill to correct errors in its penalties, Majority Leader James Agalga told Joy News’ PM Express.

In the broadcaster’s report, published on 5 November, Agalga said mistakes in calculating penalty units could cause problems when courts applied the proposed law.

He said Parliament would rescind its decision at the third-reading stage, reopen consideration of the penalties and then send the bill to President John Mahama. The corrections would leave the bill’s substance largely intact, he said.

Agalga said he expected the bill to reach the president during November.
