South Korea has become very good at churning out syrupy romantic
comedies (or rom-coms) — so good, in fact, that their rom-coms
often surpass those of Hollywood.
My Boyfriend is Type B is a breezy and enjoyable rom-com
that capitalises on Korean teenagers' beliefs that a person's blood
type can be used to gauge whether she/he would make a good partner.
Those with type-B blood are to be avoided because they are basically
creative, but very selfish and uncaring.
Pretty Ha Ji-hye plays a high school student who chances upon a
young handsome businessman (Lee Dong-gun) with type-B blood. Despite
his obnoxious personality and other warning signals to stay away,
she can't help but fall for him anyway.
The film is filled with amusing gags and scenes, such as him giving
her a walkie-talkie set for a present, so he can reach her at any
time. Or him leaving his girlfriend in the car so that he does not
have to pay for the parking fee.
But ultimately, the people who'll enjoy this movie the most are
those with blood type F — fluff-loving femmes/fag who still
fantasise frequently about meeting the right boy/girl.
This movie is distributed by the gay-friendly Festive Films, which
brought you Summer Storm and The Sea Inside.
