Malaysian Muslim group campaigns against Facebook rainbow trend

A muslim youth group in the South East Asian nation has opposed the online response to US Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage

The National Muslim Youth Association (known as Pembina) in Malaysia has launched a social media campaign against the LGBT community in response to the US Supreme Court's ruling on gay marriage last week.

Pembina encouraged users to change their profile image to a crossed out rainbow flag in response to the rainbow enhanced profile photos on Facebook supporting the ruling.

They also tried encouraged the use of the hashtag #BeliaTolakLGBT which translates as "Youth against LGBT."

“[The profile photo] has become a trend and is followed by non-Muslims across the world. In Islam it is clear that same sex relations are completely forbidden,” said the group, according to the Malay Online.

“But what was really sad is Muslims themselves have followed the direction to support the LGBT by changing their profile pictures and showing their support under the name of freedom for the LGBT,” the group also said.

How would they feel about some group starting a campaign to ban youth muslim groups?

This site never reports my liberal views. Always putting negative stories first.

Shocking!

It's like minorities rule

I think that is a great idea capitan; ban their group. But let's take it a step farther; ban all groups that oppose freedoms and civil rights such as gay marriage. Heck! I say tax the ones that are tax free organizations too!
We are going for equality on this planet not suppression of civil rights!

Going against, like them, will not improve nor fix anything. Education does, they are just opposed because they were told to do so, however, if they or anyone is interested: http://www.safraproject.org/sgi-samesexrelationshipsbetweenwomen.htm

Perhaps they should actually go and read the Q'ran with an open mind. Not base their views on narrow ideologies put about by zealots. No-one should force their world view on anyone else. I agree with writer #1. Just because their own view differs, doesn't make it right.

Is tolerance and acceptance not an ideal of Islam? This kind of thing is what turns the west against Islam.

The original Quran, like the original christian bible, does not exist. All we have are interpretations of interpretations of interpretations - more like Chinese Whispers than original text.

Religious fanatics and zealots are misguided and dangerous.

I, in this matter, stand for the reaction matt06sg has given. Problems or issues are not solved by banning each other and there is reason for any open monologue... Respect is what you earn by giving, not by banning!

Gay life is as much about right and wrong as any other life. And freedom is to express any opinion as long as it does not harm or humiliate others. And banning the other opinion, well thats what the gays have been fighting against for years, so why answer with the same wrong-doing. Why not instead try to confront those people with a simple fact: majority is in favor and has understood, we are not wrong, but just different. Want an impressive example of it. All religions are basically Cults with leaders and followers.
Both Islam and Catholic religions are similiar very narrow minded
and inflexible also not treating women as Equals and of course both dont fully accept Gays!

You would think that with all the real and serious issues that the country faces - political corruption, (MARA) politically motivated fake sodomy convictions, (Anwar) misuse (or even maybe embezzlement) of public money,(1MDB) airline disasters, currency weakness, falling oil prices etc that Muslim Youth would have better things to complain about! But LGBT are always an easy target - especially in a poorly educated muslim majority nation that has lost its way and is turning more and more towards fundamentalist religion as a way of burying its head in the sand. Malaysia used to be about secularist policies and racial tolerance. Now its about high-end shopping malls and consumerism, coupled with thinly disguised racial hatred. LGBT need not worry too much. Str8 Malaysians hate each other nowadays based not only on race and religion but also educational opportunity and disparity in incomes. Malaysian LGBT's are about the only cross-culturally tolerant group left.

"When you are dead, you don't know that you are dead.
It is painful only for the others.
It's the same thing if you're stupid."

The Muslim zealots could have put their time and energy to better use, like self-improvement, serving their communities et al, instead of wasting it on social media hunting down people they don't like and taking cheap shots. Then again....they aren't exactly known for empathy and critical thinking, are they? ;)

Oh BTW Muslim zealots, are you aware that social media is haram according to the sharia?

Lets see now the choice to live in Canada rather than Malaysia is obvious regards Gay Rights!

No need for exhaustive dissertation over this matter. This bunch of jokers is simply ignored in our country. =)

Equality for all.
