Malaysian, Indonesian Muslim Groups Boycott Starbucks Over LGBT Stance

Conservative groups in both countries are calling for boycott to protest international coffee chain's support for LGBT equality.

A 700,000 member Malay Muslim group Perkasa has said it agreed with calls this week by Muhammadiyah, a large Muslim group in Indonesia, for a boycott of Starbucks over its stance on LGBT equality.

Both Perkasa and Muhammadiyah have called for Starbucks' operating licences in their respective countries to be revoked and Muhammadiyah's call for a boycott has gained support from the Indonesia's top clerical body.

Opposition to Starbucks arose after a 2013 video of a former Starbucks CEO making pro-equality comments went viral.

Amini Amir Abdullah, who heads Perkasa's Islamic affairs bureau, said Starbucks' position challenged Malaysia's constitution, which recognised Islam as the country's official religion, according to Reuters.

"Our objection is because they are promoting something that is against the human instinct, against human behaviour and against religion. That's why we are against it," Amini told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

These medievalists are having a whole world of trouble making it to the 20th century let alone the 21st. But on balance thats probably exactly what they crave. A return to the dark and less enlightened past. Any possible modernity like tolerance acceptance inclusion or diversity is a bridge too far and not within their limited capabilities to imagine. Neanderthals backward revisionist and inward looking.

so fucking stupid! how are you gonna get your Starbucks coffees then, honey? Oh well, Indonesia can brag since most of the best coffee comes from Java anyway, but still, Starbucks is KING!

30 million Malaysians aren't in this group.

I boycott them for tax reasons but I doubt they care if I or these clerics do.

The simple response is for all gay people & gay-related businesses to boycott Indonesian & Malaysian tourism & business/trade. It's true that these 2 groups of muslims with pre-historic values, who reject equality & the human right of free speech, don't represent EVERY Indonesian & Malaysian, but they do represent a large proportion of governmental lobbyists. So why spend your tourist or business dollars in a place that does not accept you?

"So why spend your tourist or business dollars in a place that does not accept you?"

The place does accept me.

I can even buy a Starbucks coffee there. Maybe from one of their gay workers!!!

Quite the rebel I am!

How ridiculous to boycott Starbucks, even though I don't like the coffee they serve. They have gay baristas serving you in Malaysia and also Indonesia so, boycotting is going to find the baristas will be unemployed.
There are many non, muslim people that drink the coffee so I am sure Starbucks will continue on in business.

13. 2017-07-16 05:42
Do most muslims drink at Starbucks? Doubtful.

Reading the comments as I order another Soy Latte. In fact, I'm putting 25 bucks on my card. These slime balls can do as they wish. And so will I.
