Chai-Lai Angels

Director: Poj Amon

Language: Thai with English subtitles

Starring: Katesarin Akethavatkul, Supaksorn Chaimongkol, Bongkoj Kongmalai

Release: 2006-08-22

For you to understand what this movie is about, just read the title out loud yes, it is a Thai take on Charlie's Angels, and although there is really not much of a plot, this action-comedy actually manages to serve up a decent number of laughs. And of course there are the buxom babes that make up the titular angels, who are not going to win acting awards anytime soon, but still help to make this film a somewhat guilty pleasure to watch.

The storyline revolves around the chai-lais (which means "beautiful" in Thai), named after flowers and each possessing a unique skill set, that helps them in their course of work as undercover agents. Except that, for undercover agents, they are not really covered too much most of the time. Their mission? To retrieve the daughter of a Japanese tycoon, who may be the key to a great treasure.

Chai-Lai Angels toes a very thin line between humour and vulgarity, although most of the times it manages to keep within the bounds. However, the plot grows increasingly preposterous, to the point that it becomes very hard for the audience to accept what's unfolding on screen, even for a spoof like this one. Watch this for the flashes of flesh by the actresses, and the mindless humour, but be prepared to keep your expectations low to enjoy the movie.
