“Cabin Fever”, “Babyline”, “Lose Myself”. The three singles on La Roux’s artist and label pages make a compact starting point for Old Flames, the album scheduled for 6 November. The full record is still ahead; these are the songs listeners can begin with now.
Universal’s German catalogue dates “Cabin Fever” to 7 May and “Babyline” to 26 June. They have had months to find their listeners.
There is a personal story alongside the rollout. In a 4 September interview with Justin Moran, Elly Jackson discusses a relationship that began when she was a teenager and the time it took to accept her sexuality. She also talks about writing more directly and about the work she puts into her records.
For queer listeners, her account gives the writing a personal point of reference, particularly for anyone who recognises the difficulty of finding words for their sexuality. The interview is useful company for the singles, with Jackson explaining how private experience makes its way into public songs.
Fridae introduced La Roux to readers in 2008 and covered a US tour the following year. Old Flames belongs to a much later chapter.
