Land of the Dead

Director: George Romero

Starring: Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper

Screening: 2005-08-09

No, this is not a documentary of Singapore society. George A Romero's
Land of the Dead is the acclaimed director's long-awaited
return to the genre he invented, beginning with the seminal Night
of the Living Dead
and continuing with Dawn of the Dead
and Day of the Dead.

In Romero's harrowing latest vision, the world has become a nightmarish
wasteland of the undead. What's left of mankind is cordoned off
behind the walls of a fortified city, beyond which the walking dead
roams like mindless shoppers during the Great Sales.

The few wealthy and powerful try to maintain an illusion of life
as it was, dwelling high above the city in the exclusive towers
of Fiddler's Green, the last bastion of the ruling class. On the
streets below, however, the remaining, less fortunate of the city's
inhabitants eke out a hard-scrabble life.

To bring food and other essential supplies to the occupants of
the city, no less to provide for the luxuries which the well-to-do
of Fiddler's Green are accustomed, Riley (Simon Baker) and his group
of mercenaries run retrieval missions outside the city. Not only
would they have to guard their lives from the menace of the zombies,
they also have to contend with the iron fist of Kaufmann (Dennis
Hopper) who lords over the city's infrastructure and businesses.

An exciting mix of satire and horror, Land of the Dead
will keep your eyes glued to the screen while the band of brothers
tears through scenes after scenes of bloody battles with the undead.
A terrific picture, nightmares guaranteed.
