LGBT map in South Korea taken offline

Elements of LGBT community in South Korea furious after removal of map showing LGBT-friendly venues in the country

Over the weekend it transpired that South Korea's Korea Pink Map, had been taken down by the Communication Standards Commission, without explanation. The move comes just weeks after the country's blocking of LGBT apps came to light.

Korea Pink Map claims to be the largest website for regional gay businesses in the country, and was already banned for use BY people under the age of 19.

Although illegal porn sites are often blocked in South Korea, the recent move has enraged LGBT netizens particularly because the LGBT content was removed from the Youth Protection Act in 2004.

One LGBT residing in Seoul told Gay Star News: "There are no laws against homosexuality in South Korea, so there is no reason to block a site that simply lists venues. It is utterly insane and clear discrimination."

Homosexuality is legal in South Korea. However, conservative attitudes remain and traditional christian groups hold a lot of power. Additionally, male citizens are drafted in to military service where being gay could lead you to being dishonorably discharged or spending a year in jail.
