Half of gay Chinese reluctant to come out

Over half of gay men in China do not think they will come out in the next five years according to a survey.

About 55 per cent of gay and bisexual men in China as well as 49 per cent of lesbian and bisexual women said they were not likely to come out over the next five years, a survey conducted by gay networking app Blued revealed.
The survey questioned close to 17,000 LGBT in China and found 39 per cent of lesbians planned to come out in the next five years, compared to only 23 per cent of gay men.
Around 75 per cent of respondents said that family worries kept them in the closet while 61 per cent mentioned public perception.
The survey also revealed the location of China’s LGBT population—22 per cent of gay men and 19 per cent of lesbians live in major metropolises such as Beijing and Shanghai.
Around 70 per cent of LGBT respondents said they live in second-tier cities and eight per cent of gay men and nine per cent of lesbians live in towns and villages.
The poll found 91 percent of gay and bisexual men and 96 percent of lesbian and bisexual women do not have a child and that about 54 percent of gay and 65 percent of lesbian respondents would like to get married.
