Singer Comes Out at Taiwan Music Awards

Ellen Joyce Loo announces marriage in Golden Melody Awards acceptance speech.

A video showing attendees of the 28th Golden Melody Awards in Taipei cheering as Ellen Joyce Loo tells the ceremony she is married to a woman in her acceptance speech has gone viral, receiving over 400,000 views and making news headlines.

The Canadian-born singer, who performs in Mandarin and Cantonese, told the crowd: “I have to thank my wife.” She credited her wife with helping develop her music career in Taiwan and writing her first Mandarin song.

“I have to thank her for making my life more complete. I know the world is imperfect, my music is imperfect, I myself am not perfect, but with you, who needs perfection,” she said.

Loo has long been a supporter of LGBT rights in Asia but never officially came out. She once said: “sexual orientation isn’t a topic for fans. If I do get married, I will announce it to the world.”
