Taipei Hosts Asia’s Biggest Gay Pride Parade

The event, attended by tens of thousands, follows Taiwan’s legalization of gay marriage.

Tens of thousands of colourfully clad marchers attended Taipei’s gay pride parade on Saturday, the largest such event in Asia.

Attendees donned apparel ranging from bridal gowns to dinosaur costumes, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The parade follows a decision in May by Taiwan’s constitutional court that laws banning same-sex unions were a violation of the freedom to marry; the government must implement decision within the next two years.

AFP reported that despite Saturday’s celebration, many within Taiwan’s gay community are frustrated with the two-year wait to marry their partners.

Forty-six-year-old Joseph Wu attended the parade. He told reporters that he had been in a relationship for six years and simply wanted “the same thing heterosexual couples have.”
