The Philippines’ Congress launches poll to gauge support for legalising same-sex unions

So far, 51% of respondents have voted in support of legalising same-sex civil partnerships.

‘Are you in favor of the proposal in the House of Representatives which legalizes same-sex unions as a civil partnership in the country?’ The online poll asks.
In October ‘17, then Speaker of the House of Representatives Pantaleon “Bebot” Diaz Alvarez introduced a bill seeking recognition of same-sex unions and a judge on the Supreme Court later said the country’s existing constitution and civil code could allow same-sex civil partnerships.
Predominantly Roman Catholic, the Republic of the Philippines does not yet grant its LGBT citizens equal rights and the Family Code of the Philippines currently defines marriage as between man and woman. Also, a bill prohibiting discrimination based on sexual identity or gender identity continues to languish in the Senate.
