LGBT partners can be life insurance beneficiaries in the Philippines

CNN Philippines reports that according to the Philippines’ Insurance Commission, members of the LGBT Community should be able to designate their partners as beneficiaries in their life insurance plans.

In a legal opinion sent to the University of the Philippines’ College of Law Gender Law and Policy Program (UP GLPP), the insurance body said a person with a secured life insurance policy has the freedom to designate any individual as his or her beneficiary.

A proposed anti-discrimination measure for members of the LGBT Community remains pending before the Philippines’ legislature. The Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) bill seeks to give equal access to employment, education, and social services for LGBT Community members.
