Senator of the Philippines, Imee Marcos seeks to establish property rights for cohabiting same-sex partners

Following Pope Francis’ recently voiced support for same-sex civil unions, Senator Maria Josefa Imelda “Imee” Marcos called on her colleagues to act on her proposal seeking to recognise the right of same-sex couples to co-own property.

Senator Marcos echoed the Pope in saying that same-sex couples have the right to have a family and to enjoy the benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples.  She also said that she hoped hearings on her Senate Bill No. 417 could now be progressed.  The Bill proposes to recognise civil unions to give same-sex couples ‘rights and obligations’ in a long-term partnership.
Senator Marcos is the daughter of former President Ferdinand Marcos and former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
Pope Francis’ recent expression of support for civil unions for same-sex couples is said by lawmakers in the Philippines to potentially bolster the chances for passage of such long pending bills in Congress to give same-sex couples legal rights to underpin their life together.
Amen to that!
