Director Wolfgang Petersen sure knows his way around water. After
all, his submarine thriller Das Boot (The Boat)
is still the best submarine movie ever, and his The Perfect
Storm was the perfect summer blockbuster. Now, after the flop
that was Troy, he is back with Poseidon, a remake
of the 1972 hit disaster film The Poseidon Adventure.
Poseidon portrays the various passengers of an enormous
cruise ship trying to survive, after a large tsunami-like wave hit
the ship and capsizes it. Among the passengers are the classic suicidal
gay man (Richard Dreyfuss), the classic rakish gambler-turned-overnight
hero (Josh Lucas), the classic courageous ex-firefighter (Kurt Russell)
and his classic virginal teenage daughter (Emma Rossum).
Audiences looking for a thrill ride like Mission Impossible
III will not be disappointed. The US$160-million movie is packed
with enough deaths, danger and daredevil stunts to keep your nerves
frayed. There is one drowning scene that is almost impossible to
watch. Like we said, that Wolfgang sure knows his way around water.
