UK Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo hosts LGBT meeting

Some 30 participants, both Chinese and expatriates, gathered at the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo at a LGBT meeting organised by the British Embassy in Beijing and the British Consulate-General Shanghai.

The Shanghai Daily reports on July 15, 2010:

The event was almost canceled due to pressure from some government departments. The very small online announcement was removed from several websites "just in case," one of the organizers said yesterday.

Yet some 30 participants, both Chinese and expatriates, gathered in a grassy corner of the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo last night - mostly unnoticed in the semi-darkness – for a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender get-together.

Core members from nearly 10 Shanghai-based LGBT organizations gathered outside the "Seed Cathedral" to chat about the progress and the future of LGBT communities in China.

Though the numbers were small, the gathering was in the same spirit as the seventh Pride London Parade on July 3, which drew 1 million people, an organizer said.

The participants appreciated efforts of the British Embassy in Beijing and the British Consulate-General Shanghai for organizing the event.

It is rare in China, where LGBT-related issues and events are still sensitive.

"It just fits here, in the UK Pavilion, to show the amazing diversity and contributions of the LGBT community, which is a part of UK life," organizer Kathryn Rand from British Embassy told Shanghai Daily

It was the first LGBT event the embassy organized in Shanghai and second in China. The embassy held a similar gathering in Beijing on May 17 to mark International Day Against Homophobia.

God Save The Queen(s) but the Pavillion looks really cool- I would not mind to hang out there with friemds and the Police perhaps will have no rights to disturb on the British soil :P

The UK government should try to hold this in Singapore. One of the last developed countries with homophobic government and increasing fundamental religionists

Lobster... You must be Asian... Always wanting someone else to do the tough work for you

If Singapore is ever going to drag itself out of the dark ages then it has to be Singaporeans who bring about the changes

Hmmmm @ Denseaus.

You are probably not so well informed but Singapore, Malaysia and some other counties inherited British penal code that also includes Corporal Punishment system (please refer to Law books to find out when CP was abolished in the UK- you know your own sins- it was not really long ago!).

If we count from the date when Singapore gained independence the achievements of the country are very impressive.

And for your information- so-called "civilized and developed" UK does not seem to exceed expectations in enforcing gay rights and freedoms on it's own soil, falling far behind may be a dope-smoking but TRULY liberal Dutch who introduced to us same sex registration first. So unless you are a proud Dutch (I really doubt it) then you can't come here and lecture "these typical whining Asians".

But in this case what the hell do you do in KL?
I live and work here too, and I am also caucasian but people with your attitude should be asked to pack their bags and go to where they came from.

You show absolutely no respect for hosts who let you live and age on their not native to you land and just because of it you are not the one to lecture "ASIANS".

Go home, old man and teach there.

RE: Shonda oh now i see the answer to my "why" it is people like denseaus so well-off here. if people still trying to seek a confucian answer to justify every slap you receive and failing to stand for themselves... well, I just wrap my opinion then and take it back. life's short and if one side does not want to even protect it's honour then i won't be a helper. you have to respect yourself first. you won, denseaus. you were right after all. so long.

Holding up the mirror itself is an act of courage. So we should not be too harsh on good-intention comments from the likes of Denseaus.

Of course, we, meek Asian hosts are always keen to learn from the knowledge of thekentang18 too. So please lead & guide the glbt community your part of out from our repressed & ignorant society if you will. Don't fight, don't fight..love all, serve all!

As for the humble turn out of this event, do people even wonder how many are actually spies?

must push up many influencial powerful gaymen members in government forces, then got the ability to make gay promotion stands.

@8-denseaus-"Lobster... You must be Asian... Always wanting someone else to do the tough work for you."

Geez, why are the loser white bread always the first to make Asia their "home" when they have so many derogatory issues with our cultures. Guess they reckoned it is so much more easier to be a pedophile here, given our "passive" nature to await for someone else to report against exploiters like such self proclaimed know nuts about nothing losers.
Ah, meek passive Asia, can't wait for another easy meal to get trapped in the web. Must feel great being the great Black Widow Spider. Yum! :P. You're in Asia now, so pass the Sambal Tom Yum ketchup please! LOL!

LOL @ #14: Now that's honesty ;-) :-)

So who says Asians are cowardly, evasive & sneaky? ;->
